I had some serious operations a year or so ago and suffered a serious failure of energy. The only thing I could or wanted to do (except sleep and enjoy the painkillers) was to read about geopolitics (all day!). My feelings about things are so mixed that I don't particularly care and of course it doesn't matter. As Chou En Lai said about whether the French Revolution was a good thing 'It's too early to tell'.

Some people split it into hope and optimism, one you have and the other you don't.

One time I said to my psych, 'When I think about the human species sometimes I just want to kill myself out of embarrassment'. He brightly reframed this as, 'Oh no, I think it's fascinating'. I loved him for that.
