Effexor and Weight Gain

Posted by Alli on January 7, 2001, at 19:32:00

I've been on 75 mg. of Effexor for one year and have gained 12 lbs. I have been working out religiously for the past year, and I watch ever morsel of food I put in my mouth... all to ward off the depression. I truly believe the Effexor has caused the weight gain... but the doctor tested by thyroid instead. Anyone else out there putting on weight "for no reason"?

There is a reason for your weight gain. Its called Effexor.

I too have had a somewhat decreased appetite and some weight loss.

I have been on Effexor XR 300 mg for 2 years. Previous 2 years where spent on Paxil. In those periods I have gained more than 30 lbs. But I have been enlightened as to "Carbohydrate-Craving"- what causes it and how to beat it! I strongly recommend the book "What your doctor may not tell you about Fibromyalgia" by R. Paul St. Amand, M.D., and Claudia Craig Marek...Even if you aren't a FMS, Depression patient...this book really makes sense...and I have witnessed some unbelievable results! Haven

I have gained 50 lbs in the past year on Effexor Xr, 225 mg/day. I am SICK about it. And just last week started the long process of trying to wean off. I havnt decided if i'm going off AD permantly, or my last AD option, which is Prozac (I've been through most AD already with no luck). I can't handle this weight gain anymore, I don't even recognize myself. So hopefully in about 6 weeks, i'll be off the effexor, and we'll see what happens with the weight. Anybody else gone off that has gained weight? Will the weight just "come off" or am I gonna have 50 lbs. to work off?

Thanks.

LD ~ So are you convinced it's the Effexor that put the weight on? How are you weaning yourself off of it? I've stopped taking my evening dose, but I'm waking up with a racing heart and diarrhea (which is why I started the evening dose in the first place... and then the weight started coming on). I took Prozac for three months, but my libido took a nosedive. I'm wondering the same question as you; will the weight just come off or is it going to be a struggle. Let's try to get to the bottom of this! Alli

Well, I can say that not going off Effexor XR correctly will start dropping off weight, but it's the "hard way" and I don't mean working out either. Seriously, I don't think the weight will just "come off." It's not like it's water weight. Some of the pounds may come off fairly quickly, but from my experience it has been the "carb-craving" and eating of wrong foods to satisfy those urges that has caused the weight gain. I can say for me over the past week going through withdrawl, food has not been my biggest concern since it hasn't been staying with me anyway! I will keep you posted as to what happens next since I will not be getting back on another AD! Haven

> Hey Alli and Havenator,

I know I've had some extra carb cravings since the effexor, but for the most part I really believe it was the effexor. I didnt change my eating much, and the weight came on all within 6 months. I wasnt eating that much food! 50 lbs is alot to gain in 6 months! I have stretch marks all over, I hate it!

I am reducing 37.5 mg every two weeks. I tried doing one week, but was too light headed. I was at 225, now down to 150, and next week to 102.5. I'm gonna take a slow after all the horror withdrawel stories i've heard. But once i'm off, I really am interested to see what will happen with the weight. How much have ya'll gained? We'll have to keep up with this. How long till your off the Effexor?

When someone says that they have gained weight from an antidepressant I think that they are forgetting that ADs, if they work, will give you your appetite back, hence you will gain weight. 12 pounds is around an average amount of weight to loose during a depressive episode so the 12 pounds you have gained might be due to the fact that you no longer have a blunted appetite caused by the depression.

If you know what foods and what macronutrients you should be eating as well as when to eat them then weight loss is relatively easy. I am a fitness trainer and if you would like me to go into detail about what foods you should be eating and why you should be eating them then I can do that - all you have to do is ask.

Andre ~ Because I've never felt a change in my appetite (depressed or not), I'm thinking that MAYBE the Effexor took away my racing heart and feelings of panic and maybe the sedate feeling has slowed my metabolism. Ever notice how nervous, jittery people seem to be on the thin side? Just a thought.
I'm beginning the withdrawal process today after talking to my doctor. He suggested weaning myself by adding Kava-Kava in the morning and St. John's Wort in the evening and only taking Effexor every other day for two weeks. We'll see what happens.
Water and exercise (which I LOVE) will help also! Alli

Andre that all makes sense in a way except for the fact that my psych., general practitioner and 3 pharmacists insisted to me that paxil and effexor cause weight loss and even anorexia in people and they never heard of any of the a.ds causing weight gain which always made me think I was crazy or a failure. But i gained 50 lbs on paxil and 20 on effexor things that I was on for ocd and social phobia but now being 70lbs heavier i am more social phobic then I ever was before starting the a.ds ain't that a kicker? I also have a friend and sister in law both were able to eat anything w/out gaining and severely underweight one had to drink protein shakes to gain and still could'nt a few months on paxil and presto both over weight one gained 30# and the other over 40# . So what would you make of that? also it has been 8mos. off for one and 10mos off for the other and only 10 pounds lost between the 2 and that is w/some dieting for 2 women who just a year ago could'nt put on an ounce you can't tell me it is because they are getting older like both their doctors have. I don't think your metabolism slows down that much from aging 1 year one is 28 and the other girl is 30.
