I started on 25 mgs, it did make me groggy the next day but I've been dealing with Trileptal-induced grogginess for over a year now so was able to deal with it.
You know you can cut the pills in half and take 12.5 mgs, or even in quarters (though this might be tough!) and take about 6 mgs. I read some old posts where people did this.
