Hey now.....
I'm a cocktail waitress!!! Hmmmmm... little insult here? I think bad doctors should be reincarnated as a ..... my mind doesn't even go that far down.
I had a surgeon leave a cloth inside of me after a surgery. Deformed. Thanks to that doc... so good idea..... bring her to my level.... a waitresss.

> It's been awhile since we've had one of Susan's lists and I've been missing them. I just posted something on the other board that made me think about the merits of good doctors and then, by extension, of what should happen to the NOT good ones. So keep in mind this is only about those hopefully rare, but always memorable, bad ones. The ignorant, arrogant, belittling ones. What reincarnation would best allow them to atone for their shortcomings in this life?

In defense to myself.... I used to be a supervisor at IBM... worked about 60 hrs. a week and brought home about $400. I'm a cocktail waitress in Las Vegas.... just looked at my W2 to make sure.... $91,000 last year. Not so bad for a waitress huh? Could be the location, I'm in Las vegas.... but I think it's kind of SMART. What I do for a living... and what I make. Sorry, I do.

Kristi - No offense intended. But wasn't it you that posted about the difficulties of going to work and having to smile no matter what? I've held jobs like that and hated them. I wasn't suggesting that these jobs were demeaning - just that they can be very difficult. Especially for someone as arrogant as some of the doctors we've described.
But if you just want to go for torture instead of occupations:
They should be reincarnated as a 5 yr olds pet hamster.

Las vegas.... but I think it's kind of SMART. What I do for a living... and what I make. Sorry, I do.

You don't need to defend yourself. Believe it or not I started with that job because I thought that it didn't have any negative connotations that could offend someone. My mistake. I was envisioning the waitresses at one specific bar and I didn't think of it as demeaning them. Cocktail isn't a word ever heard there. I hope they make what you do - they certainly earn it - but I really doubt it. And they have to be nice to people who don't deserve it, not let their personal problems show at work, and they have to deal with not being in complete control of everyone around them all the time while not getting out of control themselves. And that last is the part that I think would particularly trip up some doctors.

But - the money's too good. With the rise of the HMO's it might even be a raise for some doctors so I think we should agree that they cannot be Las Vegas cocktail waitresses unless they've been very good doctors. I still think a stint at my neighborhood bar would be good for some of the bad ones - although it really wouldn't be fair to my friends there. Or to the people who drink there either.

Seriously. It's not meant to be about the jobs themselves. I was thinking about which jobs would be most unsuited to certain obnoxious personality types. Besides the job of doctor which we already know that they are unsuited for.

Jane,
Dont worry about it... it was just putting my job.. and bad doctors(one in which ruined,.. ruined my life) together in one thread.. I guess set me off.
I had no right to spout out what I make either. I feel like an idiot about that. I'm really not trying to brag.
The reason I think I am smart... is because I "educated" myself as an engineer.. landed a good job, and so much stress that I couldn't even come close to enjoying life. I said no more.. moved here... and got an easy job where I make so much money. I leave saying it's not fair. I don't deserve it. But it's more than what you picture... it's not me smiling at a bunch of guys, or shaking my money maker. Most of the tourists are lousy tippers. The locals are where I make my money.... usually old woman... who I just make their day by talking to them, listening to them... and I guess the smartness comes in that I landed a type of job, where I have money and can enjoy life. To me finding that is smart. That may sound terrible to some people. Unfortunately.... due to the medical stuff... I don't enjoy this money, and this time, and this non stressful job.
Yes.. I did say it was hard to put on a smile,, and it is... but that fake smile is better than none I guess. But my job isn't my depression. My job is my savior... and I believe I said that pretty much verbatim.
I've had a bad weekend... I'm sorry to be so defensive... forget about it. But I still don't think we should demean anyone's occupation. That doesn't make the person. Even the toll booth guy. Sorry so long.... I need some sleep. Take care, Kristi

Jane-

Just one view, but maybe this is a good time to let the issue die the natural death of inattention.

Kristi-

Thanks for your illuminating report on the compensation details of your job. I am now considering a career change. One problem, though. I haven't been to Vegas. But during a recent trip to Lake Tahoe, I didn't spot any guy waitresses in the classier places. Then again, I was not studying the issue at that time. Plus, I am not too sure how I would look in the outfits, especially the skirt part. Anyway, from IBM to cocktail waitress is definitely a move in the right direction. As long as you are not bored.

So far as the orginal question is concerned,I vote for the consequences to fit the offense--they return as OCD patients who are compelled to seek out only the most imcompetent and uncommunicative doctors available.

Best Wishes,

i was a cocktail waitress for a few months and found it pretty lucrative! i've often thought of returning...

i've alot of respect for waitresses/bartenders/entertainers simply 'cos i've been there...my only grudge against the casino drinks is that they seem suspiciously *weak*! of course, i was playing the slots in colorado, i wasn't a high-roller in vegas.

damn girl, you make alot of money, yr making me want to be a college dropout even longer...

i bet tool-booth operators have the best time. i bet they get all high and read good books and their friends buy them beers for letting them cross the bridge for free. they can space-out and look at the sky; the requirements are minimal, so they may enjoy lots of free time and thought.

i'd rather be a toll-booth operator than a mayor, or newscaster, or movie actor, and i'll prally be cocktailing sometime soon! good tips, good conversation, good entertainment...

You do not need to defend your occupation. One of my best moments in time was when I was waitressing nights at a truckstop. Now physically and mentally it is beyond my grasp.

I believe the original post was intended to put the reincarnated in a position were their livelihood depends on their social skills. I'm sure we've all met individuals who aren't very strong in the empathy department.

My main, number one occupation has been Mom. At one point I got one of my sons to listen to me as I listed all the different jobs I have had in my life, he responded, boy, you sure have done a lot of different things...photographer, Tv Camera Operator, Retail sales (books, housewears, fine jewelry) Non profit promototions, business development, marketing (including custom computer design sales) office manager (business owner), car sales...but I never did do what college trained me for, ba ed. Cant stand rooms full of screaming children, never could...should have changed my major ten times...and I always made enough to pay the babysitter and fix the car, until, I started selling cars. I started that job because my business partner had just gotten a different job, which meant our business was done. The kids were old enough I could work full time. In three months made more money than I had in a year and I did more with the access to reestablishing credit and contributing to non profits than I had done in over three years talking to banks and doing business plans...Funny how those blue collar, just get in there and get your hands dirty jobs if you had a common sense head on your shoulders type jobs can earn you a bit of dough ray me.

In reading all these posts, I reflect on how all of us have parts of our lives where things aren't just right and that is what we see...some of those parts include an individual we have depended on for care and direction and for some reason, perhaps because that doctor hadn't had lunch yet, for example, they let us down. Ranting and Venting is a wonderful process...and I agree...with Pax, the no smoking section is a lot like the non peeing section of the pool

mouse dashing off to use the 'facilities'

p.s. never done food service...and, when the service is good, I tip big, I figure it is all hard hard work.

Busting? No. The IBMers I have met are intelligent and smart but fealty to their employer has not (that I can see) challenged them to be creative or unconventional. The several waitresses I have known, however. . . .

> But... their is an EXTREMELY classy 5 star hotel here that hires only male waiters. I hear they make killer money. Valet makes even more than we do. Can ya drive? All makes and models?

Good to know. I can drive standard, stick, cars, vans, trucks, and tractors. Do you know whether the phenomenon of the wealthy valet is confined to Nevada? So far a classy restaurants go the best restaurants in Lake Tahoe had 100% male waiters and 100% of these males were gay. Even my conventional, naive and unobservant business associate spotted this. To enliven the heretofore languid pace of conversation, I began to speculate about WHY there was an unprecedented number of gay waiters in Lake Tahoe. I was just getting rolling when he abruptly informed me that it was all owing to the proximity of California. What does that have to do with it,I wondered, and then realized he meant that the waiters all LIVED in California, the state from whence all scary things come. I wanted to conduct a residency poll of the waitstaff, but was deterred by the expression on my friend's face when I proposed the idea. The waiters, no surprise here, picked up on the fellow's low-level anxiety about there being so many gay men in an enclosed and finite space and treated him with exquisite politeness and just the right amount of cheerful familiarity. By the end of desert they were chatting up a storm, with my friend displaying a level of animation that I had not seen before nor would see again during our four day convention. It took some doing to get him out the door and back to the hotel.

Sorry. Is this called a stream of consciousness or running at the mouth?

I hope I did not offend you with my IBM-waitress comparison. I love your posts and nothing could have been further from my intent.

In my opinion.... IBM'ers kind of get brainwashed. Not a bad thing, good for the company... but you sort of "loose yourself"... you become less important, company top priority. It's a great way of learning to deal with stress, deadlines, etc. And... your brain always has to be turning... but it's always for the companies benefit. Now my brain is turning for MINE... which unfortunately right now, isn't doing all the well of a job. :-)

Running of the mouth more like.... but hmmmm, interesting. Valet richness is unfortunately reserved for Las Vegas I think. It's just the atomosphere.. I do have to re read that paragraph before the proper response. :-)

Thankx... I guess I'm used to people thinking waitressing is such a degrating profession. But a cocktail waitress is a little different. Hard to explain, I've "waited tables" back in NY part time for many years... that was a job. This somehow turns into a career. Still something I'm getting adjusted too.
