Trazodone Impairment + Hangover

Posted by Dan_MI on August 22, 2010, at 17:44:20

I decided there's no more denying the evidence that trazodone impairs well into the next day.

On most days it would be worth it, because the sleep it gives me. I'm really a mess when it comes to sleep trazodone sort of brushes the mess under the rug.

A few weeks ago our power went out and my partner needed my help at about 3 in the morning, when I was peaking in the trazodone. He was asking me where the hammer was, and I knew where it was, but I could think of the words.

This is an extreme form of what I experience regularly on tests.

I have a final tomorrow. So tonight, sleep is optional. I'm not going to obsess over it, I'm not going get exasperated over it, and I am not taking any trazodone. I don't do anything that gives me amnesia. I woke up in a lawn chair on the back deck once on Ambien.

I'll take one doxylamine succinate 13 hours before test time.

Yeah, I've noticed this side effect. I got it when I first started and it took a few weeks for it to go away. I don't know why it went away for me, but it did. I take 25mg per night. If I go up to 50mg per night, like I'm allowed to do for extreme situations where I just can't sleep I do have a hangover the next day where I feel dopey all morning long, no matter how much coffee I try (and I'm not supposed to drink it at all.)

I've had chronic insomnia since I was about 2 years old. I'm not joking. My Dad was a terrible insomniac. He would only get about 3 hours of sleep at night and not all at once. I had a sleep test and found out that I was getting only 3.5 hours of sleep per night and not all at once. The Trazodone is the only medicine that's really helped long-term. Ambien poops out if I use it too much. It's still good in a pinch and I'll cut my 10mg tablets down to 5mg if I feel like even the 50mg dose of Trazodone won't work. I do risk some fogginess the next day. Sometimes it's worth it so I can stay on my sleep schedule. Sometimes it ruins most of the day.

I hope things get better for you. I don't know what dose you're on. I think I've found a "sweet spot" for me at 25mg per night for most nights. I find that if I go over that, I'm going to have the symptoms you describe, no doubt about it.

I once worked with a pdoc that took trazadone for sleep. She was on the unit early each morning. No idea what her dose was. What dose are you taking? Phillipa

Could you take something specifically designed for sleep? Ambien, lunesta, rozerem, restoril...anything but trazodone? I'm just asking b/c I've personally found that drugs designed for sleep (or benzos in sufficient doses to induce sleep) are usually less mind-numbing and easier to deal with than trazodone.

I sleep walk and sleep eat on the benzos and ambien/lunesta. Plus, ambien keeps me asleep for 4 hours at most, and I have a history of abusing it and the benzos.

i never went to sleep. i'm such a neurotic mess that everytime i almost fell asleep i would worry that my bladder was full. i've been to the bathroom 17,000 times tonight.

My biggest problem now is what to do with myself for the next 8.5 hours. My gym opens at 5, so I might as well go there and sit on the recumbent bike and watch awful morning shows.

I'm glad you at least got some sleep. I know the cycle. Sometimes not sleeping makes me so frustrated that I can't sleep that the frustration prevents me from sleeping. That's when I try meditation and reading. Sometimes it's best to just get up and do something because it's a lost cause.

On Trazodone, I rarely experience this. However, when it hits it can mess me up for days because my rhythm is off.

I hope things get better for you.

Check out the thread just started on the new FDA released long acting trazadone for depression. Was under the impression it wasn't good as an ad. Phillipa

I have never had a hangover from trazadone. I stopped taking it for a year because it's contraindicated with parnate, but my p-doc wanted to give it a try and now I find that ativan puts me to sleep and trazadone keeps me asleep for 8 hours. I have had terrible insomnia from parnate and am delighted with how well this combo works.

I won't try ambien or the others because I already have had problems in the past with sleep walking. At the time, I lived in a flat and I now live in a house with stairs. The thought of wandering down the stairs asleep and possibly falling freaks me out.

My sanity was deteriorating rapidly towards a sort of passionless mania, if that makes any sense. I went to bed at about 9 pm on Monday. I woke up at 9 am on Tuesday, and felt normal again.

I should confess that I raised my lithium level slightly before I went to sleep.

All and all a harrowing experience. Further insight into the bats in my belfry. Yuck.
