Manerix (Moclobomide)

Posted by melissa206 on September 14, 2003, at 6:49:21

I would love to know if anyone has any experience of coming off Manerix. I have just tried for the 3rd time to come off this drug. My psych suggested cutting by half a tablet every two days. After 10 days I was experiencing nightly vivid dreams and just feeling 'not right' so have now very reluctantly gone back on it again.

That's really surprising. This drug has the reputation of having no withdrawal syndrome. I use this drug for my depression and anxiety. In the past I never stayed on it long enough for it to kick in, and I've stopped it cold turkey a couple of times after five or six weeks without any withdrawal. I may have experienced headache and the obvious return of depression, but nothing like the SSRIs or MAOIs. It's always a good general rule to taper when stopping as your pdoc suggested... what dose have you been on and how long? You know you can start a new drug as soon as two to three days after stopping moclobemide. Is there a drug you have in mind that you want to try next or go back to? That may help to correct the feeling 'not right' and make the vivid dreams more tolerable. I'm sorry you're having such a horrible time.

Hang in there,
Jon

Hi Jon,
Thank you so much for your reply to my question. I have been taking 300mg of Manerix for over 9yrs now, long time I know. I also take 20mg of Librium but have been on those for so long that I know they are not working now.
I was hoping to try an SSRI, mainly because I suffer more with anxiety than depression and have heard that they are better for that?

Surprising to hear this. I came off 900 mg of mocolobemide a day with no effects. I tapered it over about 7 to 10 days.

Why did you stop taking moclobemide? I started taking it about 3 weeks ago and have got up to 450mg/d. In the meantime, I've cut my dosage of buproprion from 450mg/d to 300. The moclobemide is definitely helping, though not to the extent I would like. I'm planning to increase soon to 600mg/d and decrease the bupropion to 225mg/d. I had some difficulty sleeping for the first couple weeks, but that's no longer a problem. Also, my libido has diminished, though my sexual ability has not. Otherwise I've had no side effects.

Hi Melissa. I am currently taking Manerix and I really like it. If you have never taken an SSRI, you might be disappointed with it, but then again you might not. I was taking Celexa, but found I was very tired. Since switching to Manerix I no longer have the dreaded SSRI apathy. I also don't have the muscle tension since switching to Manerix. When I was on Celexa, someone could've hit me in the head and I wouldn't have reacted to it. It was quite strange. I now have emotions again, which I missed.

Manerix so far has been good for me. I feel closest to "normal" on this drug than Celexa. It has definitely given me more energy and that helps me with anxiety. I feel much more anxious when I am tired and overwhelmed.

Could you not just take an ativan or xanax when the anxiety is too bad? I found that on Celexa I still had to take an ativan every once and a while. And even on Manerix I still have to pop an ativan every now and again.

I wish you good luck and let me know how it goes.

Just found your posting and was wondering if you're still taking the Manerix and if its still working well for you. I have dysthymic depression and am trying to find the best meds to take.

Thanks, Karen

I would say that, in general, a reversible MAOI like moclobemide is less effective than an irreversible one like Nardil. Roche could not assemble data to pursuade the US FDA to approve it for depression or social anxiety / phobia.

Just so you can say "I tried it", it might not be so bad to give moclobemide a try and see for yourself. Be prepared, though, to need to increase the dosage week after week to maintain a positive therapeutic effect. Some people start off feeling improved during the first week and at a dosage of 300 mg/day. By the time they have exhausted the potential of this drug, they end up at 1200mg. This drug can make you feel very good at first. Just be certain that you understand that your results with moclobemide do not in any way indicate what your results would be with Nardil, Parnate, or Marplan.

Hi: Can you tell me what type of depression you have or why the doctor put you on Manerix? I'm having a rough time finding another med that will work like Prozac worked for me when I first started taking it. I've tried others but none have lifted the depression.

I've been on a long and very unpleasant trail of SSRIs and SNRIs, all with horrible side effects, the worst always being that they induce in me a feeling of being permanently "concussed" and a couple have made me feel really badly suicidal. My doctor has suggested I try Manerix, but fankly I'm terrified of going on another antidepressant, but am feeling pretty tired and down and am tempted to give Manerix a try in case it is the one for me. At lease it seems to be quite easy to get off if it isn't any good, unlike, for me, fluoxetine - I still have side effects/withdrawal 7 weeks after stopping. Any comments to help me make up my mind would be appreciated.
