Do Benzo's keep you from deep sleep?

Posted by RobertDavid on February 19, 2006, at 15:10:15

I have been struggling with getting a quality nights sleep for years. I take 2mgs klonopin at night for social anxiety. Though taking Lunesta on occation helps some it's not the answer and I'm beginning to wonder if benzo's keep you from getting to REM4 stage of sleep. I wonder if I'd do better by taking the dose in the morning? Any thoughts?

I'm currently taking Lunesta and Klonopin at night for sleep. I need to take the Klonopin at night for the relaxation effect. However FWIW, all benzo's can interfere with deep sleep. My sleep test showed I was getting almost no stage 3-4 sleep. I've tried other drugs that are supposed to help with deep sleep, like Neurontin and Gabitril, but they didn't seem to do much, plus the neurontin seemed to dumb me down in the daytime. My sleep doctor is supposed to recommend something else at my next visit. Xyrem is good for deep sleep, but many dr's are reluctant to presribe it.

good luck ~Jake

You could try adding melatonin and reducing the benzo. Melatonin has anticonvulsant effects.

I know it is sometimes uses as an adjucnt to people with epilepsy to reduce the sleep interference of certtain anticonvulsants.

Anyone know why Benzos interfere with deep sleep?

Logic says they should Help with deeper sleep.

Just curious

I'm not sure of the answer to that. EEG's show that people using benzo's for sleep tend to have more stage 2 sleep and less stage 3/4 deep sleep. While benzo's may give you sleep, it may not be deep, restorative sleep. Supposedly Remeron is good for deep sleep, but of course it has other side effects.

Gaboxadol is a sleep drug in the pipeline that is supposed to increase deep sleep...supposed to be out in the US later this year or early 2007.

Benzos block delta (stages 3 and 4) sleep, but don't interfere with REM sleep. This is why I cannot take clonazepam after about noon at the latest. my sleep is disturbed as it is.

FWIW, SSRI's interfere more with deep sleep than benzos.

2mg of Klonopin at night for social anxiety? Tell your Dr. to go either give up his license or go back to school. And yes, Klonopin is known to disrupt REM sleep cycles.

I take 1.5 K at 10PM and 1/4 twice during the day. I have tried taking 2MG at night and none during the day and I sleep better but begin to feel edgy around 8PM so prefer the split dosage. 2-3 MG daily for GAD is not unusual. Those taking 6 MG a day must have different body chemistry than me. I would be in a trance all day. I have never built up a tolerance to K.. Social anxiety can be debilitating. If 2 MG daily improves your quality of life and removes social anxiety you have my (and more importantly your doctors) support. I know you have tried other meds. Youe were extremely helpful with posting on your Lyrica attempt at the same time I was attempting to switch to it. Social anxiety is more encompassing than its label implies.

Thanks for very informative post. Has the K affected your mood? I've read that klonopin and other benzo's can agravate depression.

The side effects off K can are sedating for the first few weeks. Grudual increase is typicaly prescribed. If you are prone to depression then an anti depressent may need to be iincluded. I am unable to tolerate SSRIs without K. I take 5mg of LEX with K and at this point feel neither. I have no anxeity or depression. I have a full range of emotions and haave not felt better in 20 years. Each individual needs to find the right combo for themselves.

Is this specific to Klonopin or does all Benzos do this? I'm on Xanax and am concerned about my sleep pattern.

xanax has a short half life so you may awaken around four hours after you fall asleep and need to repeat the dose. Fondly, Phillipa
