Some say a ratio of 2:1 calcium to magnesium is optimal, some others say 1:1. Calcium makes me nuts in even 1:1 balance, but most people don't have this reaction.
Magnesium deficiency is exacerbated by stress, exercise and diet habits that include high sugar/refined carbo/processed foods/saturated fat/cola/alcohol. If you eat lots of nuts, whole grains, legumes and vegetables, otoh, you might be ok.
You won't know what feels good until you try it but I'd consider a least shooting for the U.S. RDA which is 350-400 mg or the Canadian, which is 600 mg/day. I've tried magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate and magnesium malate and I like malate the best.
It's best to avoid mg oxide (not absorbable and therefore a waste of money) and mg aspartate and glutamate (contraindicated for psychiatric conditions).
