Flossing really hurts my upper front teeth. Why?

Posted by Lamdage22 on September 20, 2014, at 11:46:46

When i floss my front row of teeth of the upper jaw, there is really an "inflammation" type feeling. Almost like the teeth themselves hurt rather than the gums. Or both. As if they were porous.

Its really unpleasant.

It doesn't bleed when i floss, but in the described area it hurts like sh*t.
What is going on there?

Can the dentist fix this?

Hi Lamadge. I've had something like that happen with a space between 2 back teeth. It turned out to be irritated from food because I was not flossing good enough. I went to the dentist and she said to take a pain med like ibuprofin, which really helped. Also, said to floss better there, not to avoid the area just because it hurt. It turned out that my gums were really enflamed there. I don't know if this is the case with you though. I'd recommend seeing a dentist.

Been eating popcorn? :) If it has to do with teeth and it hurts now, it rarely gets better in my experience. The real pain always hits on a weekend. Get it checked. Gargle with warm saltwater or find a teeth forum. Do you smoke?

sensodyne toothpaste. i'd put a little bit of that on your floss and floss with it.

or...

if you have an inflammation and you pick at it / floss at it you might make it worse, though. sometimes leaving things alone (putting them out of mind if you possibly can) really does work.

It could possibly be from vaping..possibly. Have you changed liquids more pg less vg. If I get carried away with a carto that isn't cooperating I can feel caps on my teeth feel like they are giving a bit! Luckily I usually come to my senses.
Drink lots of water.

Well, many people have problems with high pg. usually more allergy related. Go to the forum because someone there may have a related problem. I don't think it's the ecigs but if nothing else has changed then it's worth a look. That's why.

Oh ok. Thanks. Well something else has changed. I haven't flossed in my whole life until 3 weeks ago!

if you aren't used to flossing then you probably flossed a little too vigorously which upset your gums. the idea is to gently remove crap from between your teeth - not to use the floss to cut the gums / to pull your gums away from your teeth (exposing nerves)

But its also supposed to remove crap from under the gum line right? And exactly that is very hard on those top front teeth.. Because they are very inflamed.

Once you get in the habit of flossing you can see how futile just brushing is. Your teeth are white but something isn't working.

Grinding teeth? Gargle with warm saltwater just don't swallow it...blood pressure..anyway.

I use a Waterpik because I don't like cramming my hands in my mouth, unless it's to stifle a scream. It works great on bridgework, and my gums have been in great shape. The bacteria that causes plaque and gingivitis is anaerobic, so introducing oxygenated water (the bubbles that go in with the stream) stop those buggers in their track. Their is a version available online called ShowerPik that disrupts your shower flow. No mess.

I opened my mouth in the shower to just rinse my mouth out. I have crowns on my two upper front teeth and one other beside those. Those teeth were shattered by a beer bottle.
When the water hit those crowns it knocked one off but i caught it before it went down the drain. I'll stick to flossing.

I can't use the sonicare toothbrush my brother gave me as a gift because it feels like it's going to rattle my crowns off. I gave it away. great gums don't look great with no teeth and god knows i can't afford a dentist or either of these products.
If you brush and floss a.m. and p.m. and do it correctly then your gums will most likely be fine.

Been on the phone with medicare for an hour. Hope that didn't make me sound like a grouch. :)

Not at all. I am sorry your crowns don't fit properly. That is a real shame. I don't know what awaits me when the divorce is final. I'll lose the medical/dental coverage; though dental insurance is a laugh. It basically pays for one tooth restoration a year, and that rarely is what someone with problems needs.
I hope you aren't still on hold...

You got that right! My crowns do fit well but I've had them on the front teeth for 42 years. That sonicare made me nervous.
I bit into a roll at a deli years ago and one of my front teeth with the crown broke off at the gum line. I had root canals done on my two front teeth years ago. Caps and all. Those shots in that hard area behind those teeth are some of the most painful I've ever had. I guess that includes non-dentistry pain too. My dentists assistant was holding my hand. He gave me two shots and then said, if you liked those you're going to love this one. My body straightened out like a board. I changed dentists after that.
He had to screw a bit into the remaining tooth then reset the tooth on to that. Not taking any chances.

I had the exact same thing happen, except that I fell out of a bar and landed on my face. Crowned tooth broken off at the gumline. I was messed up to begin with but hoping to die in the dentist's chair. I don't think I have any teeth that have not been restored. I have nightmares where my teeth are flapping like sheets on a laundry line, just swinging back and forth.

I may have said this already but I played a 3 or 4 hour gig at the Officers Club at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi with an abscessed tooth.
It was torture. On the 50 minute ride home I was sprawled out over amps and drums in a van. Whacking drums with an abscessed tooth.

Good grief! I had a similar thing happen when I was attending a day-long seminar on how to fill out a single government form (for the Department of Defense). Really.
I had a toothache the night before, and had called my dentist and made an appointment for the following day. Took some ibuprofen and went to the seminar, front tooth throbbing.
By lunch, my upper lip has swollen so that I looked like a Botox disaster. By 5pm, my eyes were slits, my nose was flattened, and I thought my head would explode. Went home to have my EX husband laugh at the sight of me.
The dentist couldn't even give me anaesthesia for pain because the access' pressure was so great. He had to drill right through it to let the absess drain, and I screamed and writhed in the chair. Never cursed a dentist so roundly just for choosing his career.

Almost the grossest dental story I have...but not quite.
