This world is freaking crazy

Posted by lynn971 on February 15, 2006, at 17:31:38

The teacher gave my five year old punishwork.
she has to write a scripture 3 times. My God, no wonder people dont want anything to do with christians.

I am a christian, but that is ridiculus.

It certainly a way to alienate her from the text, isn't it.

My son used to come home with dictionary pages he had to copy when he got in trouble at school!! He only brought the pages home if he did'nt get them done at lunchtime. I understand the need to punish children for bad behaviour BUT can you expect a child to behave better after you took away his only physical outlet of the day?

That's exactly what I thought!

What was she thinking? Nevermind that it's a five year old, why doesn't she just punish her by telling her she has to go to church? It makes about as much sense.

I Thessalonians 4:11 "Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hand, just as we told you.

Ok. This child is 5 years old. She thinks that she lives in Weesleeanna instead of Louisiana. My goodness. I am not saying that she does not need to be disciplined but she does not even know how to transpose the sentence. It is an advanced school. She reads and writes in cursive, but....

This week I have been so upset with things that deal with my children.

I am tempted to take the rest of the week off!

Aw-w-w! Poor little thing! That's not cool at all!

However, teachers have been making students write lines as punishment for time out of mind, and they always make them write something they think they should learn. (I will not talk in class. I will not talk in class. I will not talk in class.) I doubt the teacher actually meant for the scripture 'itself' to be punishment. I think its just unfortunate that it came across that way. That's my take on it anyway.

P.S. Your kids are lucking to have such an attentive mother looking out for them.

I didn't think the teacher actually thought the scripture itself was punishment. But I think only a negative association can be made between the two when it's being used in that way, especially on one so young.

I totally agree. I do not want my child to associate scripture with being punished. I want her to thing of scripture as something comforting and refreshing - not bad memories.

The teachers used to take away my CAPD/ADHD son's lunch and recess. I told them NO WAY, and explained why that didn't make sense. They'd try to do it anyway, so I'd pick him up at recess time, take him to the park and then McDonalds. He wasn't disrespectful about it, but he knew how I felt - he needed to run off his energy, not get it all pent up. He hated school enough as it was.

Probably not the best example, oh well.

Thats exactly what I meant. The teachers expect them to come back to class after they have sat the whole lunch hour at a desk and not be disruptive or socialize when they have taken away the only physical and social time they have all day. I am not putting down all teachers!!!!! The teacher my son has right now is AWESOME. She has a GREAT mix of dicipline, consistancy and fun. Unfortunately there are some out there that are'nt so wonderful.
Best of health,
Laura

I, too am lucky that my son has a good teacher this year. She appears to have 8 ADHD cases in the class which indicates that she is experienced in dealing with these special children.

As far as your daughter Lynn, I was shocked to read of her punishwork. I doubt I would be able to stop myself going to see the teacher and telling her that the punishment is inappropriate.

My thoughts are with you.

Good for you. I think you did a wonderful thing for your son. I had to explain to the teacher that my child's hesitation before she answers a question is a form of stutoring. (I spoke to a speech therapist about it). The teacher was taking it as disobedience or as my child not being ready for first grade next year - at least that is the way I took it.

I agree with you totally, as a teacher myself, I understand fully that children need to be children. They have a lot of pent up energy that needs to be burnt off.

I know that I am not a perfect teacher, but I try to understand where my students are coming from, before I make a decision to discipline.

Where I work, some of these children have left a horrible situation at home to come to school. If they are having a hard time adjusting to the day, I believe that we should give them time to adjust or at least figure out why. They may have just gotten beat, raped, or they are hungry because mom was too busy seeing where she would get her next crack fix.

I get so angry when a teacher where I work goes out looking for reasons to write students up.

I know that I am off the subject, but this is just something else I needed to vent about.

I got so angry, because I was working with this particuliar child, and he was doing so well. Another one of his teachers said, "I am trying to get him back at saacc." (A place for delinquent children) I am trying to keep him off the streets and in school, and she is trying to put him in an unproductive place. He was doing well in my class. Oh it makes me so mad!!!!

Sorry for venting so much.

luv ya,
Lynn

It's good to know you see things from both sides. I guess thats why youyou feel so strongly for not only your daughter in this situation, buy other kids with real stuggles in their lives.

I completly understand your frustration. I have 3 kids, 2 still in school. when they were younger I would deal with this kind of think by calling or visiting the teacher right away, and calmly comming up with a comprimise. Not one of them argued with me, and I was always satisfied as I would go in prepared.

good luck to you,and your daughter.E

You sound like a great treasure as a teacher. My sister is like that. Please don't get burnt out. Know when to give yourself space.
Man'o'man, you sound like such a cool person. Your kids are lucky to have you for a mom!

Hi Lynn,

I admire you for what you do, I couldn't do it. Teachers take over so much responsibility now, it's really sad.

Our son had/has awesome teachers except pre-school and 1st grade. It's actually school policy to 1st take away recess, then lunch, it stinks - you're right the kids need that time.

We have a lot of kids with bad homes in our school, and I think school is an escape for them, but you can see the hurt when they're put through even more when someone isn't fair with them. I've seen some ppl at school play favorites, I hate that. Granted some kids are difficult, but usually there's a reason.

Our lunch room monitors look for problems. What is that a power thing or something? Most are good though, and some have bad days.

You sound like a wonderful teacher. Your kids are lucky. what grade?

I'm really glad you vented. That is an excruciating situation, I've been there, not as a teacher but as a worker for the mentally handicapped. Some of the attitudes just chilled me, and yet it's so hard to fight it.
A worker would say "She's been totally (insert pc word for horrible) today so I'm not letting her have hotdogs at dinner."
And I'd think,
"Well, how would you feel if you had people coming in and out of your home, telling you what to do, and you have no comprehension of why you have to do it.. you just do, someone barges into your bedroom to tell you that it's time to go out, but you don't want to, but the paperwork says we have to go out..'"
You don't even have the words to say "I'd like some more salt on that, or my back is itchy"
Think about it! Would you be in a great mood?

You sound so cool Lynn, teachers like you are the ones kids remember forever.
I actually have more to say, but I'll be kind and stop here. :)

Aww thanks Lynn!

I actually left that job after 10 years, it was really hard, but I had to move.

These are in the "This world is freaking crazy"

The only two I'll talk about, or I'd go on forever.

We as workers would get a warning if we allowed any of the clients to play on the swings at the park. Because they were *adults* and it's not *appropriate* It would perpetuate a stereotype about them to the rest of the community.

Ya.. and.. not allowing them to make their own decisions is NOT a stereotype? okay...

You'll choke on this one.

I'm NOT MAKING THIS UP

One of the young men was in a wheelchair, and he had extremely poor motor control. Whenever he ate, most of the food would fall of his fork before he got it to his mouth. He liked his food, it was very frustrating.
One of my co-workers suggested a type of fork that is made just for that problem, it's curved and it makes things much easier.
The head office wouldn't allow it, as "That would only accentuate his handicap"

Oh I see, and pretending he has no difficulties at all is so much more respecting of who he is as a person.
*sarcasm*

After 7 years I still have to vent : )
