Is purging dangerous?

Posted by Deneb on December 6, 2005, at 13:45:54

I find myself throwing up more now since I started my diet. Yesterday I threw up several times. I don't binge. I feel guilty after eating normal amounts of food. I rationalize purging by saying that I don't do it enough for it to be dangerous to my health.

How can I prevent things like electrolyte inbalances? Can I drink a sports drink for that?

I just did some research on the dangers of purging and I think I'm going to stop now. I don't want to risk a heart attack.

Wish me luck in stopping.

Be careful Deneb,
worrying too much about your weight can become very dangerous. Talk to you doc about it, make sure someone is following along with you because its innocent things like this that start a serious eating dis cycle. Be careful, try not to obsess to much about food and scales. It can become a replacement focus for other things. The complications from it can become really unpleasant. Just...be careful

and once it has you, it holds tight. It may seem easy now to say, Ill just do it for a short time but that short time turns into years...

Just wanted to add, you might want to look into maybe alittle help before it gets out of control....espically since you take the wellbutrin, right?

Glad you're stopping before it gets compulsive. Eating disorder behaviors are some of the hardest to treat.

And purging is very bad for you. Besides the heart issue you mentioned, it damages the enamel on your teeth, and erodes the tissue of your throat and esophagus, which can lead to cancer of these areas.

Bad bad habit.

I've just realized that the more I do it, the harder it is to stop. I get seriously tempted now whenever I eat something that is bad for me. I'm going to tell my pdoc tomorrow and ask him to tell me how dangerous it is for me.

Knowing all the bad things it can do to me makes me stop.

Deneb,

I've been worried about you around this issue. I think it's *wonderful* if you told your pdoc today. He can really be a help with this in more than ways than one, I'll bet. We (your Babble friends) want your physical and mental health to be the best they can be, and purging takes you down a dangerous road away from that path.

Post more about it if the need arises. There are some very kind and understanding folks here who can give you the "real deal" on ED behaviors.

Are you trying to eat no less than 1200 cals. a day? (or 1000, if you just can't manage more right now) Anything less is counter-productive and makes your body think it must conserve fuel as you're lacking food; it self-protects against possible starvation and actually slows metabolism some, defeating any attempts to lose. Just some things I was thinking about...:-) You take care.

gosh i don't know how you do it. i try to throw up and it takes forever!

and as the others said, it is a dangerous habit for many reasons.

but about your electrolyte question. a while ago when i lost a lot of weight my gp said to drink sports drinks but i couldn't seem to eat solid foods so he suggested things like 'boost' or even slim-fast shakes. because they contain vitamins and stuff.

best of luck Deneb.

Hi Deneb,

Did you talk to your pdoc? Very brave of you and a really hard, but positive step if you did.

Purging can cause some pretty nasty physical stuff as others have posted. Sports drinks will temporarily help an electrolyte imbalance.

My worst purge caused blood vessels in and around my eyes to burst. I've been bulimic for 27 years and really keep in control most of the time, but purged a few days ago. I just had to. I understand why you think you have to.

Let us know how you're doing.

I've temporarily abandoned my diet because I was getting too obsessed with food.

My pdoc didn't think much of my purging. He asked me why I would do such a "gross" thing.

I'm still able to control myself at this point. I should stop before I make it a habit.

I'm sorry about your ED Poet. It must be tough for you.

Sad fact of it is that most pdocs are pretty clueless about EDs. Either he doesn't know enough about them to be concerned, or he hopes that saying it's "gross" will be enough to stop you from doing it -- which just shows that he's pretty clueless about EDs.

Unfortunately, we here on this board are not so clueless, so do take advantage of our hard-won expertise.

Look at those last two bits, Deneb: Once upon a time, Poet was still able to control it, and could have stopped before it became a habit. And now it is tough on her. What does that tell you? And what are you going to do about it?

I wish you the best of luck, Deneb, and hope that you do stop before it becomes more of a problem.

Good luck.
