I appear to be experiencing a strong response to Puritan's Pride Enteric Coated Omega-3 Fish Oil, 1000mg (180mg EPA, 120 DHA) (www.puritan.com) after recently increasing the dose to 6 pills per day in three divided doses. I'm very surprised, as I've tried fish oil before with no response (though never at this high a dose). Since it's enteric-coated, I'm experiencing absolutely no fish aftertaste or burps.

Other quality brands are NOW, Jarrow (can buy them at www.iherb.com) and NSI (can buy at www.vitacost.com). I'm not sure if these are available in enteric-coated versions.

I wish you the best of luck with your treatment.

I was under the impression that a fish oil preparation for affective disorders should be higher in EPA.

Are you familiar with Omegabright of Carlson's products?

Scott:

I get a lot of benefit from the Nordic Naturals Omega-3 liquid. I don't know why this brand works for me. I can just feel some type of stress relief effect with it. (However, I do have to take it in large amounts--5 to 10 grams.) I used to use the Carlson's fish oil liquid all the time. It never had the same effect on me as the Nordic Naturals. I've also tried Dr. Andy Stoll's Omegabrite capsules, which he touts as superior to anything out there. They never did anything for me either, even at high (5 to 10 grams) doses. Go figure. I guess we're all different in our reactions to what we put in our bodies.

SLS, you mentioned Carlson's. That is a topline brand. Arctic Naturals is another one. Most health food stores have the good ones.

Other than quality and freshness, sometimes not found in the cheaper brands, another important thing to look for on the bottle is that the oil is purified. No heavy metals, no mercury, no PCPs. If it doesn't specify, then I personally would not use that brand.

You're welcome. Thanks.

I'm no longer experiencing the surge of energy, insomnia and vivid dreams that I did a couple of days ago, but I'm still doing consistently better. During my latest aborted trial of Nardil, even the non-effective lower dose of fish oil that I was taking helped significantly with the side effects that I normally experience with Nardil.

One study found that 1000mg per day of EPA was an effective antidepressant while 2 and 4 grams were relatively ineffective. There was no DHA at all in the pills. This is why I'm taking 6 pills a day-so I end up taking around 1000mg of EPA a day, which is the critical number, I think. I don't recall reading anything about the EPA/DHA ratio being particularly important, though it may be for some people. Personally, I like taking a pill with a lower EPA number, as it allows me to be far more flexible with the dose.

Is Omegabrite Stoll's product? If so, then I tried it many years ago with no effect, though I doubt i tried it long enough to give it a fair trial. I think I've heard that Carlson's is a good brand. There are many good brands out there.

Fish oil/EPA more than likely won't be a panacea for me, but it would be great if I've found something that can consistently provide me with a functional level of well-being without as much fear of poop-out.

I've certainly benefited a great deal from your many well-informed posts and am glad I was able to return the favor, if only modestly. Good luck to you as well!

Thanks.

You folks have given me a good idea as to what I should look for in a fish oil preparation. I find it fascinating that PC_Load_Letter has such a difference in his positive response to one brand of fish oil and not to others. I get the feeling that there is something else going on here pharmacologically, especially when one can feel a difference within 24 hours. I would think that supporting sprouting new neurites and recovery of brain tissue would take longer than that.

I was recently prescribed Lovaza. It is a prescription-only preparation of fish oil that is absolutely purified. No fish burps. I was prescribed Lovaza by my GP to help lower my triglycerides. I was all to happy to take this fish oil so as to help stabilize neuronal membranes and foster the growth of neurites.

The problem at this point is that my prescription plan refuses to pay for it, even with a pre-authorization. I couldn't believe my ears when I was told that a one-month supply of these gelcaps cost $199. Damned pharmaceutical companies. The think they can charge anything they want to for new drugs. And they can because insurance companies have no choice but to pay for them. I don't blame them for denying such a ridiculous price for prescription fish oil, especially when it can be obtained at 1/10th the price as a food supplement.

So, now I need to find a replacement for the Lovaza. I have been taking 4000mg a day. I have felt better over the last few days. However, I also added to my treatment regime N-acetylcysteine (NAC). I really don't know which is responsible for this improvement, but I have no intention to give up fish oil. I am going to appeal the decision of the insurance company one more time. Actually, it is the doctor who must make the appeal.

My current treatment regime:

Nardil 90mg
nortriptyline 150mg
Lamictal 200mg
Abilify 20mg
Deplin 7.5mg
NAC 1200mg
Fish Oil 4000mg

Hi again.

Does it matter from what species of fish the oil is extracted?

I'm not aware of any difference in efficacy based on the species of the fish. My fish oil was extracted from anchovies and sardines. The smaller fish, being lower on the food chain, will naturally contain less mercury than larger fish, though this should be processed out in any case.

By the way, I'm still responding to the fish oil. My mood is not great, but it's certainly acceptable. I've noticed the most improvement in my energy and motivation levels. I'm getting much more done than usual.

Re: Best brand of fish oil ?- Minami Nutrition

Without question, Minami Nutrition is the best... I just got back from Whole Foods. Paid (before tax) $45 for 60 count of PlusEPA... Serving daily is 2 softgels.

Trust me, no one has obsessed more about omega 3's for mood than this company. It's all they sell. And if I'm not mistaken, all the major studies use their stuff. (If someone's aware of a different brand clinical studies have used, please let me know)

My doc is at a leading teaching hospital, and says his colleague's specialty is in finding the results of fish oil on depression. He says lately, the stuff he's published in the big name journals have all pointed to findings that EPA alone is what is responsible...

I'd get their DHA stuff, but I can't justify the benefit it might have on my cardiovascular system/skin or whatever given the prices...

PlusEPA is the most concentrated EPA-only formulation they make.

The stuff is binded with stuff that makes it more likely to get picked up by your brain's receptors, as if it were metabolizing actual fish. Which is the big selling point, of course.

If anyone knows an online source for this stuff that is cheap, or at least bulk, please let me know!!!

I have taken fish oil from CVS for years in those big jars their store brand sells... with big softgels. I would take a dozen each morning, to compensate for the low potency and less sophisticated binding/extraction methods...

but I still had terrible mood all the same. This stuff, in a matter of weeks, I swear, made me go from having so-so mood to really feeling like in love with world. =)

but man, is it pricey!!!! the good stuff, they know they're good, so it's more expensive.

these people are obsessed with their production methods, and it's a very unique method. It's not just about potency it's how it's extracted, how it's binding to the brain...

these things can be rejected as toxins and metabolized out if your brain rejects it.

I like Natural Factors which I get from iHerb: http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1&pid=4251

It may be available somewhere else, but the last time I looked, iHerb had the best price (when buying 240 softgels). Natural Factors is a Canadian company and iHerb says, "All Natural Factors products are manufactured in accordance with the Government of Canada's Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), among the highest standards in the world." They also say they get a fresh supply directly from them every month. This I believe because it's one of their top sellers.

There's 400mg EPA and 200mg DHA in each capsule, and at their price, they're 10.4 cents each. I'm not a member myself, but if you shop at Costco, I've read they carry Kirkland Lab fish oil at an even better price. Kirkland Lab is a quality brand, as far as I know.

I've tried almost every type and brand and combination of fish oil out there.

Omegabrite
Minami
Nordic Naturals
Carlsons
Health from the Sea
Dr Murrays
much much more.

They all affect me the same and are are high quality.

I just am VERY VERY sensitive to it. I am trying the lowest dosage I could find (thanks Lao Tzu) Eskimo 90epa and 50dha per day and so far i seem to be able to tolerate that little amount.

hi. :) i am very desperate to know if this brand will cause fish burps. i bought it impulsively because i knew that if i didn't, i never would. i made an assumption that because the amount of omega 3 in the 1g pills was high (400 of EPA, 200 of DHA, so 60% Omega 3) and it was "pharmaceutical grade" or branded as such, that it would be purified enough that it will be just oil and none of the molecules associated with the flavour and scent of fish. sure enough opening the bottle, it smells pretty innocent.

i am usually completely vegetarian (with some allowances for health, like with vitamin d3 and pill composition issues), but i have also always been very, very averse to sea food. (i'm one of those wierd people who can throw up from sea food smells.) fish oil is quite the jump for me. i am finally trying it because i never have and i don't know what there is left to try. the fact that i pretty much never get EPA in my diet, and that EPA seems to have a broad utility, for both ADHD and depression (indicating a more dopamine positive or frontally positive mechanism), and also may also notably help prevent a significant percentage of cases schizophrenia, which also *may* strongly suggest it may help with cognition.

so i'm trying to be very hopeful. but i am also trying to prepare myself just in case, did you notice any fish burps or creeping taste from this brand? (i'm pretty sure we have the exact same product)

For me, if I have any, fish burps are usually only the first day or two that I take them (if I haven't been taking them all along). Iow, they only last for a couple days. But then I usually take 4-6 at a time. Here's the advice I've seen to avoid fish burps:

Keep capsules them in the fridge or even the freezer.
Make sure you take them with your highest fat meal.
Try taking digestive enzymes when you take them, and/or probiotics.

I think the most important is to take them with a high fat meal.

Hope it works for you. :)

Hey guys...I just discovered a new product that has amazing reviews and does not give any fishy after-effects. It is esteemed as the most potent blend of omega 3 and antioxidants on the planet. I've been taking the product now for 1 month and it is fantastic.

Check out this link: http://www.naturalnews.com/MoxorDemo.asp?ID=ITWC%20-%20Rhea&Phone=248-350-3501

I'd love your feedback--especially if you've been taking the product.
