Magnesium for depression - Does it work long term?

Has anyone taken magnesium long term for depression? I was wondering if it poops out.

Ever since I learned about it (about ten months ago) I have been taking it. However, I've been on several ADs at the same time. So no, I haven't found it to poop out, but I don't know if it's causing my relative remission. Probably not. I'm betting on the Zoloft and the Lexapro.

I thought magnesium worked on anxiety. Does it have an effect on depression as well?

I use it for bathroom purposes at nightime. What kind of dose works for depression and anxiety? Love Phillipa

Hi Trotter,

Not sure if it's the magnesium that's only working for depression. Feel like it is keeping anxiety & depression on an acceptable level. Been taking it for something like 5 years now...

George Eby found 800mg daily of elemental magnesium (divided into 4 doses) in the form of oral magnesium gycinate was best for him. This form of magnesium seems to be less of a laxative, and may even be more efficacious for depression than other forms, although this is unproven.

I take it transdermally via epsom salts baths and magnesium chloride oil applied to skin, which makes it impossible to know how much magnesium I am getting. Just a matter of trial and error.

Don't know if you've done any searches on this here but JLx, who posts on the alternative board, has had great long-term success with magnesium. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't already.

Magnesium citrate is great for stress and tension. It's relaxing without being sedative. However I havn't really found it to be a powerful antidepressant.

We all react differently to things, depending on our unique biochemistry. Me, I get really deeply depressed with anything more than dietary magnesium intake. Extra magnesium sends me to the dungeon really fast.

My doctor had my magnesium checked and said it was excellent. Maybe that's why I don't do well with extra.

I do find however that I can tolerate a short low dose Epsom Salt bath, which gives me a good night sleep and helps aches and pains. I think my body likes the sulfur more than the magnesium.

I take it to sleep at night. It has an effect as a muscle relaxant. In that way, it is very effective. But I have not encountered use of it as an anti-depressant.

Interesting. The only oral magnesium I have tried is magnesium citrate and it was also negative for me moodwise, yet I also feel better after epsom salts baths (lasts a couple days). It could be the sulphate.

I will take oral magnesium glycinate at some stage to see if it is different to citrate for me, and also I will take some mag chloride baths to test the sulphate theory.

I am quite intrigued by magnesium.

As I understand it, taking that amount at bedtime may help some relax and sleep, but can easily make others more alert and restless.

George Eby suggests splitting the dose into 4 and taking with meals. How much to take in the evening is probably a matter of trial and error, but don't be surprised if it keeps you up. Could go either way.

Long-term? I've never even noticed any *short-term* mood-elevating properties of magnesium.

I do take supplemental magnesium and I think it's a good idea for most people to do so as well (as part of overall good nutrition), but I wouldn't expect it to have any significant effect on depression, unless perhaps you're severely deficient. If you notice such an effect, count yourself lucky. It might have some protective effects against stress. It's been a while since I looked at the literature on magnesium, so I won't say much else. Take a look at "Modern Nutrition in Health and Disease" by Shils. It's the most definitive text on nutrition that exists.

A tip on buying magnesium: in the U.S. you can obtain pharmaceutical grade (USP) magnesium sulfate cheaply OTC as Epsom Salt, packaged in milk-carton-like containers. How much to use is an individual decision, but you probably don't want to take the amount recommended on the package, which is the recommended dose for use as a laxative (unless of course, you're using it as laxative). If it produces a laxative effect, reduce the dose and/or divide it into separate doses.
