George Eby found 800mg daily of elemental magnesium (divided into 4 doses) in the form of oral magnesium gycinate was best for him. This form of magnesium seems to be less of a laxative, and may even be more efficacious for depression than other forms, although this is unproven.

I take it transdermally via epsom salts baths and magnesium chloride oil applied to skin, which makes it impossible to know how much magnesium I am getting. Just a matter of trial and error.
