New PDOC! Valium For Me!

Posted by Phillipa on February 14, 2005, at 20:51:09

Finally saw the new pdoc. She is probably in her 70's and is highly recognized. She has published numerous articles for JAMA, and is a reviewer for the AMA. She knows all the older drugs well. Anyway when I told her I did not like klonopin and xanax made me tired, she asked what had worked. When I said Valium in the past, she said then let's switch you from klonopin .5mg to 5mg of Valium twice a day. When we got to the chloral hydrate, she said "don't try to fix it if it ain't broke"! She left me on it. Finally a pdoc who will work with me! When I told her about the W/D and seeing a neurologist for the violent shaking and twitching she listened. I told her that I had to adjust my own meds till I saw her. She then said "you know your body better than anyone else". Do you think I may possibly be on the right track at last? I hope so! We also bought a new computer and if all goes well I'll soon be able to get mail and "Babble" again. Fondly, Phillipa

congratulations on on a day well spent! Your new doc sounds like an experienced professional...I personally think this could be an excellent doctor for you. I saw my new psychiatrist today, too! She changed my dx from what my psychologist had (no surprise there) and now I'm taking Trileptal in addition to my buspar, adderall, and cymbalta. Anyway, congratulations again on finding a doc who will work with you, and enjoy your new computer!

my pdoc is in his 70's also, well im not sure, i just saw his medical license certificate which was granted 1955.

He is not a big fan of old drugs, goodness he shoved me a Cymbalta prescription in my face faster than you can say depression.

I ask him about MAO's, he usally smirks, yea, bad memories and rolls his eyes back. I ask do you rerember anything past 1990? he usallly says no.

i am in the middle of a sentence, faking looking down, only to find he quickly falls into a snooze then says the last word i said, as if he was listening. Crank that dang hearing aid up to MAX! grandpa.

Well you Diazepam your way to peacefulness.

i have got stress!!!!!

-- LOL :-) My pdoc is in his 70s as well. And, like yours, he tends to nod off during a visit. My family doctor, who, although much younger, is good friends with him, has since warned me to schedule my appointments early in the day (she actually said, when I told her I had had an appointment the previous day with the pdoc at 2 p.m., something like - oh, and he didn't fall asleep -). Too funny. I had a boss once that used to fall asleep in meetings and and I would give him a kick under the table to wake him up. Too bad once he let out a snort and drew a lot of attention to himself.

Maybe one of the reasons that she is so alert and with it is because she stopped seeing pts if they are in the hospital and has someone else see them there. Then I assume she sees them when they are out of the hospital. If I am not mistaken, I think the receptionist said she sees pts only 3, or 4 days a week from 9am till 7pm. I saw her from 6pm til 7pm. And not a nod! I'm sorry your's are so "old". I guess after trying 4 times in a month and doing research on them on the Internet that I got lucky! Fondly, Phillipa

For whatever reason I have always had good luck with older female doctors.

Hi Phillipa,

You're new pdoc sounds good :-)

>5mg of Valium twice a day

Has she given you permission to increase the dose if you need to? I hope so :-)

>"don't try to fix it if it ain't broke"

There's a lot of truth in that!

Hi Ed! No, she didn't. That could be partly my fault as she said, "So you don't need anything during the day?", and I said no. I guess I'll have to see how it works first. I think I will take it before I go to sleep, when I go to read, and see if I feel anything from it. Fondly, Phillipa O

Nice one, Phillipa! Those old time docs have been around the block and seen meds come and go. They tend to know the deal and don't get caught up in the all the hype and media campaigns. I hope the valium works its magic on you again.
Keep me posted, all right? Bye.

Good for you! Glad you've found somebody to listen to you. My doc... well, let's just not go there. Suffice to say, I'm still looking.

Best,
Jen

It is so good to hear a positive story.
I'm pleased for you Phillipa.
You mentioned that Xanax makes you tired. How about valium? Does it or did it ever make you sleepy or slow?

No, actually it relaxed me in a good way. I remember being at work years ago, going through a very stressful time, getting rx for valium, taking 5mg and saying Ahhh, I can finally relax. I took my first dose of 5mg last night and unfortunately that Ahhhh, did not occur. I've probably built up a tolerance to all benzos as I've been on them for over 30 years. Fondly, Phillipa
