Remeron - Grogginess

Posted by HSP on February 16, 2004, at 17:40:05

Hi there - My doc put me on Remeron 30mg QD at night. I'm one of those that started taking Paxil when it first came out and cannot get off of it because the withdrawl symptoms are so bad (extreme vertigo). The idea is to wait until the Remeron gets to steady state and titrate down on the Paxil. Then stop therapy all togther.

My question is regarding side effects. I'm on week two and I still have a hell of a time getting out of bed in the morning and when I do I feel groggy as hell. Does this side effect go away over time? I'm also extremely irritable... anyone else have this as well?

Thanks!

Get another doctor. My psychoparm. could go from Paxil to other drugs and not miss a beat.
Remeron is a weird drug. The higher the dose, the less sleepiness and weight gain. It worked fair for me at 60mg but as monotherapy, I've seen few people do any better on it. It's a better augmentor but not with Paxil.

The grogginess & irritablity go with time, but I don't see how Remeron is going to help you give up Paxil. Ask your doc about switching paxil to prozac, it's vitually painless to give up.

Cheers,
Panda.

The Remeron would in effect take the place of Paxil - since it's relatively easy to stop therapy with Remeron and not experience side effects, he felt this was the best way to go.

Titrating off Paxil is great. Great if you ever want to see how it feels to have your friggin' head spin like a top. There is a class action lawsuit against GSK for this reason - non-disclosure of withdrawl symptoms experienced by patients in their clinical trials.

Fun. Wheee. ;) I've been on Paxil for 11 years, time to see what life is like NOT being on anti-depressants.

I had all the side-effects you mentioned with Remeron and I had to quit it after just six days. My experience with Paxil withdrawal was awful,I was on it just two months and the withdrawal lasted one full month of pure hell (cold turkey). I think that SAM-E alleviated my syntoms and I would suggest also benzos if you have to quit the Paxil. The change with Prozac that some has suggested makes sense to me. Good Luck

If you want to come of ad's altogether i wouldnt recomend switching to prozac, up to you/docthough on that one.. remeron is a good med for me alone... the higher the dose the less sedating it will be.. seen as you only took it onece lastnight give it atleast 2 weeks on that dose, if you are still tired/groggy then up the dose, taper of paxil slowely, you should be ok on the remeron, hardley no side affects, just watch out for any infection..

Yes, I was extremely irritable. My daughter reminded me the other day...Mom, remember that one medicine that you were on, and the one that you used to yell at us all the time (normally I'm a pretty patient person.)

The Remeron knocked me out within an hour of taking it, and if I remember right, I had some pretty fantastic dreams on it, too!

I do not remember if I felt groggy the next day or not. But irritable, yes. I stopped taking it because I was losing my temper all the time.

Good luck...It really lifted my depressed mood, and made me feel like life was beautiful all over again. If it hadn't of been for the irritableness, I would have stayed on the med.

There wasn't alot out there when I was on the Remeron, but irritableness, yes....It was good to hear that someone else experienced that, too..and that it wasn't all in my head!

I got the vertigo (extreme) withdrawing from Prozac. It eventually tapered off, but it took 4 months.

Glad you didn't have problems coming off it. It was horrible for me.

Yes... my wife is about to kill me! I also keep weighing myself incessently to see if I gained weight since that also seems to be a major issue with this medication.
