could someone explain to me what ECT is?

Posted by borderliner21 on March 23, 2002, at 21:18:25

I can't take anti-depressants because I am predisposed to EPS. Would ECT be good for me? What is it and how do I apply for it? I have major depression.

ECT refers to electroconvulsive therapy, or shock treatments,

A good deal of infomation on ECT may be found at:
http://www.psycom.net/depression.central.ect.html

While most psychiatrists in the USA do not do ECT, any psychiatrist should be able to refer you to a psychiatrist who does.

BTW, EPS are not seen with some of the newer antidepressants such as Remeron, Serzone and some of the innovative treatments for people with depression such as Mirapex and Lamictal.

And another site that DR.GOLDBERG might have mentioned is www.stopshrinks.org , or www.ect.org .
There are many websites devoted to ECT . Try doing a search at www.google.com .

Be careful searching the net on ECT. There is more horseshit than fact out there.
Max Fink is the authority on ECT but I have trouble finding his site because of all the BS about him.
If you are suicidal, ECT is the first option.
If you can't take ANY meds, ask your pdoc, if you're in or near a big city, who does ECT and go for a consultation.
There are only 2 doctors in Austin that do ECT and if I couldn't take meds, I'd get ECT in a second. I have a good friend whose 29 yr old daughter was severely depressed and I got involved with the situation at his request. She had her first treatment Thursday and will have 3, m-w-f of next week. They are doing this on an outpatient basis which is really cool. Saves money. This lady was going to kill herself. It was just a matter of when. I just told them the doctors names, my mother's experience, which was positive, and a list of a ton of questions.

Too much coffee,

Phil

The above websites are totally uncredible sources of info about modern ECT. For starters, the people that run those sites you cant even get them to acknowledge the basic fact that severe mental illness is biologically based. Secondly, you cant even get them to acknowledge that the seizure is the key component of ECT. So I just give up with these people and write them off. Ignore them. Do you own thing...think independly. Have ECT. Dont worry what others say about it or think about it.

David:

In my real life, I am a college English professor, a writer, and an editor. For fun, I pick apart the grammar, punctuation, and spelling of everyone I know. For money, I do that to folks I don't know.

I don't correct people here. Maybe it's because I am aware that many of these folks are not native English speakers. But it's more likely because I think some of them might have enough going on with their depression and their self-esteem. To criticize them about their use--or misuse--of the language would be petty.

yes, those sites are very one-sided (nm) » OldSchool

Thanks for info Phil,
I am scheduled for ECT very shortly..I am home from a four week hospital stay due to attempted suicide....I am on a short leash...go to day hospital and make sure I am not alone =:o(

I would really like to hear how your friend makes out.....meds don't work for me either but I am on Lamictal and have to get it out of system before ECT.

I know there is lots of negative scary stuff out there about ECT. When you are desperate you do what is needed. I have done a lot of research, talked to others who have had it done and know, right now, it is my only option.Link below with some good info that I think I got from "Old School".
Thanks

How is the day hospital? I went to one when I was an adolescent; I didn't even realise there are adult ones (you are an adult, right?). It might be something I'd like to try. How much time do you spend there? What are some things that they have you do? Sorry if it's too personal or too difficult to talk about, I'll understand.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris, I don't mind being asked at all and I am definately an adult, in years anyway (47).

Day hospital is a step inbetween an actual in hospital stay and the Psyc services in the community.

They are both very similar. Day hospital is an Intergroup talk therapy with same situation adults. You know, sit in a circle and bear your soul. The difference is you are in the hospital with one of the Pcyc docs running the show and you can talk to her afterwards about private issues, concerns, med changes etc.and the group is open, people come and go.

When you progress to the Community psy services you are usually not in a hospital setting and more services are offered by "Counsellors", not a doc. 10-12 week sessions on things like self esteem, assertiveness training, anger managementetc. Interpersonal group therapy is also offered that is closed to the same individuals that started it and it runs for 12 weeks.

You then have to wait and see your Doc at your regular weekly, monthly whatever.

When I am feeling particularily fragile I like the day hospital as the Doc is right there if needed for meds or to admit you again (if needed)

Hope this answers you question....

Yes it does. Thank you (nm) » Mags
