Mirapex and sudden sleep

Posted by Josephine on February 24, 2001, at 4:48:17

Mirapex, which I took for a sleep disorder, tried
to kill me. I'm being facetious but three times I
suddenly fell asleep while driving on a California
freeway. One time - thankfully at mid-day - I
changed lanes.

Anyone else having this experience? I stopped Mirapex
completely. No warning from my physician. But I am
now aware of the manufacturer's warning.

That is really strange. I find it to be as tolerable as Tylenol in every respect. It just shows how much of a difference there is in people.

I take 6 mg per day.

Sometimes, a dopamine agonist like Mirapex or bromocriptine can have an opposite "paradoxical" effect. Instead of causing someone to feel more activated, it can cause profound sleepiness, especially, at low dosages. If you decide to return to it, I would be curious to know if the sleepiness continues at higher dosages. It might. Have you tried adding either Zyprexa or Risperdal?

Good luck.

This is very serious stuff and well documented. Mirapex and, if I remember right, Requip, can cause suddden sleep 'attacks'. They come on suddenly and thus can happen at the worst of times (i.e. when driving). Recognize that most people who are taking Mirapex have Parkinsons. There may be a select population that is prone to this, but, as far as I know, it has not been identified yet.

BTW Josephine, why were you taking it for a sleeping disorder?

Andrew, is bromocriptine legitimate for use in non-Parkinson's depression? (Is it the equal of Mirapex?).

I'm looking to get off Mirapex because it doesn't seem to do anything for me. But it once did, so I assume that another dopamine agonist might help.

"Sal",

No bromocriptine is not a good substititute.

But it is important for me to know just what happened with the Mirapex- for two reasons- 1) so we might figure out what med might work for you and (2) this is a new med and I'm trying to keep track of all the feedback so experience will be gained on how to use it.

So the questions: How did Mirapex help you? How long were you on it. What was your highest dosage? What were the side effects. Did side effects make you stop. Did you experience poop-out with Mirapex. If so, how long before the start of the AD effect did the poop out occur. Have you expereinced poop out with any other meds (which ones). What are meds are you on. What is your diagnosis or symptoms (any bipolar). What others meds have you tried and how did you repsond to them.

Sorry for all the questions. But I will try to help. Email me at andrewb@seanet.com if these Q's are too personal.

Thank you for your interest in me...

I have unipolar depression with painful flashbacks and OCD. I have taken every medicine available in the United States, and am now on Effexor, Remeron, BuSpar, Wellbutrin, and Mirapex. All the other medicines don't help me at all--I've been on them all before, anyway.

I got up to a high dose of Mirapex from the very beginning (6 mg), and it seemed to work within a week. I have had no side-effects except for a little stomach upset which I remedy with Protonix. However, this week, it does nothing at all for me. Its the most shocking thing. I have gone to Mexico to get foreign medications before, and I think I will do that tomorrow. I want to pick up either amisulpride or reboxetine. I thought about bromocriptine, but the people on this newsgroup think that Requip would be a better idea. The problem is that there are no studies done on Requip for anything other than Parkinson's disease (contrary to Mirapex). This sucks.

How long before the poop out Mirapex?. Which other meds have you had poop out on (i.e. stimulants)? How long have you been on the buspar. Do you consider your BP completley stablized? Please be detailed.
