summer blues

Posted by kellyR. on August 4, 2000, at 17:43:49

I know it sounds crazy because people mostly get depression more in the winter,But for as long as I've known it seems like i feel sadder in the summer.my dr. thinks it's because I scared of being around people & since more people are out in the summer it makes it hard to get out & go places.I have a week off of work this coming week, & i want to do somethings w/ my kids, my son wants to go crabbibg/fishing & to the boardwalk to go on some rides. So how can i do these things so my kids don't hate me?

Hey Kell: I get depressed more in th summer too. I cycle up and down throughout the year but I am mostly down in the summer. I have a body image problem and I do have a little social phobia so I don't like to wear shorts or go out with a lot of people. I know how you feel but I don't know how to get past it so you can spend time with your kids. Maybe just let your kids motivate you. I'm sure you are a great mom so just concentrate on being the mom and to hell with anyone else. i know it's a lot easier to say but yo know you are getting unconditional love from those kids. You won't find a love like that anywhere else so embrace it. know that they aren't judging you and they will love you no matter what you do or don't do. Try not to think about any "other" people, just enjoy your time with those precious children.
Don't know if that makes any sense at all but I hope so.
Love ya Kell
Take care hun
Tina

Can you take along a buddy of yours that can maybe keep an eye on the kids if you need a time out for a minute or so? You can just get away from the noise for a bit and try to get your bearings while someone else watches the kids. Then you can return to them refreshed and ready to go again. If you need to do that all day, at least you'll have someone you can trust looking out for the little ones and you'll also be able to take care of you.

From a chemical standpoint, most people in general, especially someone with SAD (seasonal affective disorder) tend to have lowered levels of certain neurotransmitters in the winter months.

However, the reverse can also happen. Some people become depressed in the summer months but it is not common. The reason people tend to be more depressed during the winter months is because of the lack of sunlight, which leads to a lack of melatonin. The lack of melatonin is what causes the changes in one's body chemistry and the depressed mood.

Hi Kelly - What a difficult one!! I think the suggestion of having a friend go with you sounds good. I wonder if there is an activity that you would feel more comfortable doing with your kids? Maybe taking them for a special ice cream treat or something. If there was something you'd feel better doing with them, maybe someone else could go fishing/crabbing/rides, etc? A friend or babysitter maybe? Just a couple of thoughts.

Will be thinking of you. You sound like a wonderful Mom!!! Congrats, when you've been through such hard things in your own life.

Let us know how it goes.

Warm thoughts, Kath

Kelly, I thought I was the only one who got depressed in the summer. I like autumn and winter much more. I love rainy weather, too. Aside from any scientific reason, maybe it is because summer magnifies all the social outdoorsy events where I tend to be such a loser. I also tend to not sleep worth a damn in the summer. I think the heat and the light patterns do wierd things to me. I started Serzone a month ago and it's helped some with the sleep - can't say that it helps with the moods as my wife up and left me a couple of weeks ago.

Hey, Kelly. Thanks for your interest.

I don't mind crowds in public places, as long as they're not rude, too thick or we have to engage in queueing behavior. Mingling in social situations can be hard, sometimes impossible depending on my mood or the clique-ishness of the crowd.

My wife hates crowds and mixers more than me. I'm not so sure that the depression drove my wife away. Several other factors are involved, one of them I believe to be lifestyle as well as growing apart in the last year: I went to grad school at night and she became an executive and worked very long hours. My depression made me withdrawn, gave me low self esteem, take on lots of guilt and other stuff. It was always there in my 41 years - it grew worse in the last year.

I have talked to her since she got as we have to discuss finances and stuff. It's a sad story capped by how she does not want to work at this - she pretty much bolted when things got stale - there is not the least bit of curiosity on how the meds help. Some people ask if there was someone else she was seeing. I don't think so but I wish the answer was yes as those things have a way of ending and bringing couples back together.

I suppose it's off the topic of summertime blues. You can write me direct about this marital stuff if you like at smchale@filenet.com

Kelly, sorry you are struggling.

Abby wrote a few months ago about having low cycles during the summer, too.

I have had that at times, too. Summer means heat, change, often less structure, often not seeing people who go away, etc. And, baring parts of the body that one might prefer to keep covered. Also, trying to live up to romantic ideals of terrific happy summer life that is drilled into us from early in life by the media, etc. (just look at the tv ads).

Dr. Norman Rosenthal, who is considered an expert on SAD, has a whole chapter on summer SAD in his book "Winter Blues." He says it's caused by heat and maybe, the bright light of summer. I have it, and it's definitely triggered by heat. I become so sluggish and depressed. I've learned to handle it, though, by going out as little as possible during the hottest hours, and by
constantly splashing my face, arms, etc, with cold water. I take a spray bottle of cold water with me whenever I have to be in the heat, and spritz myself constantly. . And I take lots of cold showers. These things really work.

The book is by Dr. Jerrold Bernstein, and I found it in the library at the med school here. It was geared toward physicians, but I managed to look through it until I found a section on using MAOIs with other meds. I don't remember the
name of the book, but you should be able to track it down by his name. Dr. Bernstein also wrote a newer book on meds. (I haven't seen this one.). Hope you find what you're looking for...Stephanie L.

YES! Other people who hate the summer too! It's funny, because in the dead of winter, I imagine how great it will be to be able to walk around my neighborhood without wearing boots, a hat, gloves, etc. The first warm days are joyous. But, really, I can't stand being hot, or being around a million other hot people, especially those who insist on wearing all those strappy halter tops. I am so much more comfortable staying home with my air conditioner and reading or zoning out to TV. Sure, I enjoy a nice summer vacation in a desolated area wiht just my family, but besides that, I really dislike summer. At least this one. I can not WAIT for jacket season to begin. I hate wearing shorts. And being a sweatball by the time I get to work. And yes, according to the media, the summer is supposed to be the best thing EVER!
Though I know when it's winter again, I will be dreaming of summer. Maybe I'm just the type who is never satisfied.
I'm glad to hear of others who hate summer. But I'm sad to hear of marital problems and anxiety about spending time with the children. I do think it's important not to think about other people when you're with your children. They're only thinking of how great it is to be with you. Here's to a quick end of summer, and a quick pop can bee season, yet another of my "irrational" fears. Laura
