Anyone know something about allergies in pets?

Posted by Phillipa on July 25, 2007, at 18:47:20

Anyone remember Chloe the pup I got last summer she has white fur on her legs and stomach and it's stained brownish and I can't get out with a bath. She will itch but no spots or signs of skin irritation. Could it be an allergy or just a dog that scratches not all the time. Neighbor said it food allergies. Or do I need to get one of those fur whiteners the groomers use as we groom her ourself? Thanks. Love Phillipa

Does she lick herself? The reddish brown spot is usually from licking. Perhaps Bitter Apple? Although honestly, my dogs have always seemed to like the taste of Bitter Apple.

Yup so no Vet appointment needed. Some of these people here focus too much on their pets. Love Phillipa

You might wish to run it by your vet next time you see him/her. Or ask a groomer. I'm no expert on this.

I've just got a pup with red paws and a liking for licking his paws. I always wake up with a damp spot next to me on the bed. And yes, it's from licking. :)

Same here well it's not constant. I will heed your advise. Also when in Petsmart again will ask one of the groomers. Thanks Phillipa

My dog has allergies and actually takes "people meds" like claritin, for it. LOL It can be food, but more common is the indoor and outdoor allergies that plague a lot of us. Some breeds are more proned to it. My dog also has to have certain shampoos too or he will break out into a iching fit actually iching until he draws sores and blood. I have to bring my own that I got from my vet, with me when I take him in to be groomed. Good luck.

Mine too, only she takes atarax, which is hydroxyzine hydrochloride. Stupid me accidentally took one of hers recently. D'oh! Fortunately, it's not a no-no for any of my meds.

Yep, I carry around her shampoo and leave-in conditioner, and I have to make sure they know not to use any perfumes. Well, that's more for me, lol. And they can skip that little kerchief, too. I always just throw it out.

Mine has always had a food allergy, since puppyhood, though we didn't know it at the time. Back then, she threw up a lot and needed encouragement to eat. She got a bit better when she started on Venison and Potato dog food. Now she's on a completely vegetarian diet, including treats.

Just today, ironically, I got her blood test results back, and she's strongly allergic to dust mites. That explains why it's a year-round thing for her. She's had it so rough she's developed chronic allergic bronchitis, so she has to be on a low dose of steroids as well as a bronchodilator to feel best and not hack all over the place.

So, in two weeks we start giving her allergy shots. won't that be fun?

Hmmm.... I'm wondering about switching to venison for my Cavalier. She's had frequent digestive upsets since she was young, but my vet has said she's one of those dogs who doesn't digest her food thoroughly or something. I can't remember, it was so long ago he told me not to be concerned.

But then she's also had a lifetime case of coprophagia, and I've always assumed that had something to do with her tummy upsets.

(What a revolting habit, by the way. My son and husband won't let her kiss them.)

All I know is that my cat & my daughters' cats had 'chin acne'....sort of black spots or little scabs & when we changed from dry food to canned food it stopped. Then once when I was away, I had the person who looked after Ginger give him dry food (easier for catsitter) & he got the problem again & it disappeared with the intro again on wet food.

I imagine you could find something on the internet about it.

good luck, hugs, Kath

Ooh, sorry. I forgot the part of the answer relating to your question. Sorry, P.

The discolored stuff is most likely a sort of "rust" that comes from licking as others have said. The dog's saliva oxidizes something in the hair or skin and it's like it's literally rusting. My dog gets it between the pads of her feet where she licks a lot. I can estimate how her allergies are doing by how rusty the hair is on her paws. The color doesn't come out, at least not in my experience. But if you can stop the licking, the new hair won't get stained.

take care,

gg

Well she's due for her shots in about a month so I think that's when I'll ask as it doesn't seem to bother her at all. It bothers me that she may be feeling itchy. Love Phillipa

What kind of dog is she? I think all of my dogs (mixed breeds from shelters or rescued off the streets) have had some degree of allergy, quite often due to flea bites and the type of grass that's in this area.

Wonder if there is Xolair for dogs? (Your poor doggie sounds a bit like me!) I never heard of allergy de-sensitization shots for dogs ....! Do you have to wait around afterwards to be sure she doesn't have a reaction? How do you get a dog to use a bronchodialator? I'm envisioning this little plastic thing with the canister that I squeeze while I have the mouthpiece in my mouth and inhale. Just can't envision a dog doing that !!!!

She's mixed, too. Beagle, basset, and cocker spaniel of all things. She's the cutest, though. It came out a good mix.

We're actually going to give her the shots at home. The stuff arrived, so we're going to pick it up tomorrow night and learn how to do it.

LOL, that would be funny. Actually it's aminophylline, so it's just a tablet twice a day. She's a good pill-taker since she's had them forever, it seems.

I've heard that folks are trying claritin now. She used to see a veterinary allergist/dermatologist. I recently spoke to him and he said that's the newest antihistamine for dogs. He also said that dogs "just don't get" respiratory symptoms from allergies, and he suggested I take her to an internist, as he thought she had COPD, not chronic bronchitis. I think I'll have the vet office send him a copy of her allergy blood work. ;)

One other thought ... heart worms can also cause coughing and what appears to be respiratory difficulties. No doubt your doggie has been on heart worm preventive so that's not an issue. Have they done any chest x-ray?

I'm curious about how this all comes out - do hope little puppy will be feeling better. Our furry friends really are a beloved part of our families and our lives.

D'oh! I forgot her heartworm for the month. Thanks for the reminder. She's had heartworm bloodtests every year, and is on the meds year round. She's also had a few chest xrays, and you can see the lung damage, unfortunately.

Yep, they are precious. I agree. The things I do for this dog.... :)
