At the moment I'm working on developing a sort of a basic level of fitness. I got out of the habit of exercise, this year. And cut back a lot last year because I didn't much like trying to train at the University gym with the teenagers. The swimming teenagers are different because they work really hard (long hours) for their sport and their gym work is assistance (so they seem to have programs) and they don't really have land legs and their arms and legs tend to be long so they aren't all grunty and obnoxious in the gym the way teenage boys sometimes can be when they discover their mirror muscles.

I think I do want to try diving. So that means I need to work a bit on my flexibility / mobility so I can hold and move quickly into pikes and tucks and so on. Handstand. Handstand -- jump! Oh, dear. Progressions... Progressions. Just jumping off the edge of the pool in a streamlined position you drill into the water quite deep and it actually freaks me out being under the water like that. I think I will have a lot of practice to do.

I'm a bit worried, actually. I've been watching a lot of olympics and youth olympics lately and I get the Olympic lifters and their coaches don't really tell them what they did wrong because they know what they did wrong. But the divers seem to need to ask. I don't know that diving is a sport that you can do independently without a coach telling you what you need to do. We can't set up cameras in the pool, either, I don't think. So I wouldn't be able to place cameras and see the replay. Though... I'm surprised they don't train divers like that. With immediate feedback of coach narrative to a reply of the judges camera angle so they can see what they need to do better next time. Maybe they do... It was invaluable for me with Olympic Lifting. Yeah.

I'm also surprised a lot that at the Olympics there was a lot of variation in where people were jumping from on their take-off from the 3m springboard. I mean, some were jumping from pretty far back and some were hanging 10 with the front of their feet off the edge (which apparently makes it hard for them to launch to get the height). I don't know why they haven't drilled it over and over and over and over and over with the particular foot placing. I mean, I'm sure they know what they are doing, but I don't really see why that is something that varies with each dive...

Anyway...

I hope you feel less depressed (actually happy) soon.
