All good arguments. I have found, though this is many years in my past, that (when I was younger) and had younger friends in Canada, because of a difference in social stratification, youth tended to grow up faster than their counterparts in the US. For one thing, alternating provinces and territories have 18 or 19 as their drinking age. Sexual consent, yes, technically has been 14 as long as I can remember. Whether someone knows enough about sexuality at that age depends largely on their individual maturity and the morals of the country. Until our values started pervading into the Canadian landscape, urban centres in Canada were more progressive and less inhibitory than those in the states. That in itself doesn't mean naivete doesn't exist, but the cultural values are different. 14 -- maybe a bit too young from a US standpoint, but who is to say it is from a Canadian one. I think perhaps 16 is a more mature age on par with its heritage in England, but these of course are slippery slopes, with as pointed out making 16 and 17 illegal. Some places have laws that allow 2 year differences in age at that juncture to prevent such a waste of court time.
