What I liked about the book is that it takes the idea of HSP and makes it a strength and a gift rather than a weakness, as the rest of the world seems to view it.

Also, if you think about what it is like to react to stimuli faster, more often, and more intensely than 80% of the population, it makes sense that everyday life can be overstimulating. I find that there are many times when I just need to be alone and quiet. It's not withdrawal or avoidance, I just need less stimulation. But the rest of the people wonder what's wrong with you, because they are not overstim'd.

That's the general idea. She takes various aspects, like how did you get this way, how do others react, how does it affect life, love, work, etc. She gives lots of case examples and ways to cope. She gives ways to embrace this aspect of ourself.

I have gotten a lot out of it. It makes me feel better about myself and it helps me understand puzzling things. Like why is the TV volume making me so agitated? etc. Why do I always feel like I need a "mental health" day, even after a weekend (answer: my husband is home and I need time truly to be alone.)

I haven't even made it all the way through the book as I tend to read a bit and then reflect for awhile. I also return to chapters again and again.

So, if the idea of being HSP seems right to you, and the work book is too focused, you may get a lot out of the more general one.

By the way, did you know that presidential candidate Wesley Clark's favorite band is Journey? I can't decide if that makes me like him more or worry about him. Tee hee.

Take care,
gg
