> Vincent if coffee isn't a stimulant how come docs don't allow it if anxious or on a psych unit? I need to google the tea as know chocolate has theophilline used in asthma but never heard of it in tea??? Love Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,
I don't write that coffee was not a stimulant...but it affect the brains differently than the others stimulants...

Tea is maybe less strong than coffee but it's also a stimulant...not more good or not more bad as coffee " Tea contains theanine, and the stimulant caffeine at about 3% of its dry weight, translating to between 30 mg and 90 mg per 8 oz (250 ml) cup depending on type, brand and brewing method. Tea also contains small amounts of theobromine and theophylline..."

For what I know and my experience, I completly withdraw any caffeine in my life for a couple of months and I was not less anxious or less depressive and I still had social phobia and general anxiety at this time, even worst than when I was drinking coffee.

Some studies show that caffeine stimule social interraction between people...so if the coffee is banned from your psychiatrist hospital, it's probably because they just don't want to make hospitalised people more anxious...being hospitalised is a major source of stress.

I wonder why each time I go see my family doctor or my psychiatrist, they always have a big cup of coffee on their desk!!! lol I can smell the good odor of coffee 1 mile around !!! lol

At the psychiatrict hospital where I go, coffee is allowed..and no psychiatrists or doctors told me to stop it completly...they all agree on the fact that 3 or 4 cups maximum a day is allowed, even if you are anxious.

Anyway, all people are different, for me, coffee don't worst my social anxiety, it make it less strong. With coffee, I can find a little bit of energy to do what I have to do at daytime. At least, it's natural.

And another point, why a psychiatrist, like the one I had before, prescribe to me Ritalin in the past? And why some others people on this forum are on stimulants drugs even if they are anxious?...If my main problem is general anxiety and social phobia, that weird no? Mean that some people react very well on stimulants drugs for recover of their social phobia problem or anxiety...others need more benzo drugs to help them , others need a combination of these 2 types of drugs, others need to add an AD also and other just need an AD... So like I Write, we are all different...I don't argue on this...and yeah, coffee can cause anxiety...but as far I know, SSRI's or SRNI's or even Parnate or any other drugs can cause anxiety as a side effect...even Advils or Tylenols...lol
