Beta blockers for anxiety -- interactions with WB?

Posted by Racer on October 21, 2005, at 1:26:51

I was taking propranalol for anxiety, which worked a charm, but when I started Wellbutrin, my doctor warned that they would interact, and the propranalol wouldn't work anymore. Whether by suggestion or not, it didn't seem to have the same magic after starting Wellbutrin.

My question is this: the propranalol worked well for my anxiety, which is almost entirely physical. Any psychological components I can deal with easily enough, but the physical fear, the adrenaline, etc, that is incapacitating. Benzos are not an answer, because I fight off their effects and stay agitated and anxious and basically nuts, but will go into blackouts on them. What I'm hoping for is something to cut the physical response, to shut down the adrenaline pumps for a while, or maybe mop up some of the adrenaline.

Can anyone suggest something that will reduce the adrenaline surges, and maybe explain the whole Wellbutrin/propranalol thing to me?

By the way, my dx are depression, anxiety, and anorexia nervosa. My current meds are:

Wellbutrin XL 300mg
Provigil 100mg
Cymbalta 50mg (Reducing from 60 to 40, so another couple of days from now it'll be lower.)

Thanks!
