My guess is the liver, and the interference of alcohol in metabolizing the med and vice versa. I know that my liver enzyme tests come out elevated (on effexor).

I, too, find varying effects of alcohol. I tend to avoid it, but the occasional glass of wine or a cordial can have unpredictable effects like you mentioned. If I know I'm home for the night, etc. then, it might be ok, but if I have to be functional for a time afterward, I don't indulge.
