Your wife should take the minimum amount required to control her symptoms. Many people with anxiety/panic take 2 - 4 mg per day. Once the nervous system is stabilized, most can reduce their dosage over time. Some can wean right off while others have to continue indefinitely. The question is not about living med-free but about maintaining a good quality of life for your wife and her family. Benzos have the advantage of having very few side-effects and being extremely safe unless mixed with alcohol. There is no doubt your wife is now dependent, but so what if she is doing well.
