Are you eating at least 1200 calories a day? Any less and you will defeat your purpose as your metabolism goes into a conserving mode, thinking you are "starving." Got to fuel the machine to keep the machine running at a proper level :-)

I think it's wonderful to get/keep a handle on weight, especially when you are still young. I surely need to do something about mine! But do be mindful if it becomes extreme. People don't keep up extreme and/or rigid eating regimens, you know? (And likely shouldn't) Moderation and changes in eating habits that can last a lifetime are best. But you know that having worked with Weight Watchers - they fit that mold, IMO.

I'm eating a lot of food, but I've been keeping track of the nutrients and calories and I'm close to but under 1200 kcal. It's actually kind of hard to eat a lot of calories when you limit carbohydrates and focus on veggies and lean protein!

Today I ate:

3/4 cup liquid egg scrambled
Raw cauliflower and broccoli
1/4 cup low cal dressing
decaf coffee with 1/4 cup milk
More cauliflower
More decaf with milk
2 slices ham
2 tilapia filets with creole seasoning
1 grilled zucchini
half a grilled red pepper
30 g Becel margarine
decaf coffee with 2 T skim milk powder
1 mango

What did you eat today?

I've just discovered a really healthy and delicious treat!

Decaf coffee (pdoc says I shouldn't drink caffeine) with 2 tablespoons of skim milk powder (the equivalent of half a cup of skim milk) with 2 packets Splenda (no calorie sweetener made from sugar).

The skim milk powder makes the coffee so yummy! It tastes better than an expensive latte! Skim milk powder is full of vitamins and minerals too!

You should try it! It tastes really yummy!

On another note, I was feeling crappy yesterday and I thought it was my low carb diet, but I woke up today feeling chipper, so who knows?

Perhaps your liver thought the situation called for releasing some of the glucose stored there.

Hi, I just wanted to say good luck in your pursuit of weight loss! I am trying to do the same, but it is very tough at times.
I think personally that cutting carbs so drastically is not the best way to achieve weight loss. Sure it helps to drop the pounds quickly at first, but it is difficult to sustain, and not necessarily the healthiest route to take. I believe a diet that includes all food groups is the way to go, but obviously keeping your overall caloric intake lower than your output. As long as the carbs, fats and sugars you are consuming are the kinds that are beneficial to your health, you will be so much better off. And eating say 5 small meals per day instead of 2 or 3 larger meals is great for boosting your metabolism, and it helps to curb those hunger pangs!

Little things add up...doing the following helps me with my health goals:

- wash fruit and put in bowls and place towards the front of shelves in fridge when you get home from the market (instead of putting them in vegetable drawers where they can be forgotten)..pre-washing/soaking helps the incentive as a quick snack instead of reaching for a bag of chips

- bean salads are cheap, healthy-and VERY filling. Black beans, red onion, green pepper, garlic, corn, olive oil and cilantro-and tastes fresh for several days (soak the beans to get rid of potential gastrointestinal issues!)

- a hard boiled egg makes a healthy snack too-boil several at a time in put them in bowl in fridge too

- when I make a salad-I usually make one for the next day in put it in a tupperware container with a paper towel in it; another incentive to eat healthy w/o the effort of washing, drying and cutting everything up again

- always keep frozen berries on hand to make quick smoothies and save for times when when you don't feel like going to the market to get fresh produce but have ran out; I buy bananans every week but usually get sick of them after a couple days-so there's always 1 or 2 ripe bananas left-they sweeten the plain berries so no need to add sugar to the smoothies

Just some small tips..as everything adds up and things like that can become habit.

Yeah, I found this out the hard way....making extreme changes doesn't work for most people, or so I hear...

Gradually changing your eating habits over time, or at least I found, is most effective. No thinking involved-it becomes habit. No thinking = no disappointment, no going hungry, no calorie counting, no obsessing, no beating yourself up over a relapse such as indulging in that pint of Ben and Jerry's when you're PMSing... :)

As far as setting goals or expections, the long-range goal of slowly changing your diet and lifestyle patterns is comforting if you give youself, for example, 2 years to 'implement' all the changes. This takes all the stress out of the equation... and leads to more positive thoughts as opposed to negative thoughts or guilt when short-term goals slip from time to time....

Many times in the past, I set a goal-I'll walk/run 3 days a week-I ended up quitting out of discouragement. I found just doing exercise when I'm up for it incentivezes me rather than discouraging me....which could lead to habit and pleasure from those activities rather than "must dos"...

I think a support group is a good idea to-to meet with others who are developing or sustaining healthy habits can be encouraging or incentivizing..I've never joined a support group, but a meet up group, or any type of support group sounds positive....I wouldn't like weight watchers, all that counting points seems to be a disincentive..though not bad for some who have the time or motivation.

There are over-eaters anonymous groups all around. I don't think a person has to be overweight to join and would guess there could be inspiration and support found there.

Thanks for all those great tips! I'm going to try them out.

So far I am still doing well. I'm cooking my own meals. I'm eating fish nearly every single day. I read that it's not good to eat fish everyday, but I did find that two servings of tilapia are okay to eat everyday.

I like tilapia, so that is good!

Oh I'm being scatterbrained, sorry..I just went grocery shopping so I washed my fruit this morning, displayed it 'invitingly' in my fridge and am soaking black beans to make a bean salad...so this thread fit in with my day...:)

Yeah-Fish is awesome..good for you..seafood is my favorite!

I have this really, really easy way to make yummy Talapia filets:

I couldn't find the original recipe I used, but I modify most of the recipes I find anyway. For the one I linked, instead of baking, I sometimes pan saute..if you spray the pan with cooking spray, it works with olive oil and 1 or 2 pats of butter..still healthy. The Japanese breadcrumbs make a difference-though they are more expensive so I sometimes use regular breaadcrumbs..

The only thing that concerns me about fish - and I don't meant to steer anyone here away from fish - is I noticed the cheapest fish usually comes from China-where the waters are the most polluted in the world. So I don't know if farm raised is better or not? Do you know? The last batch I bought was from South American waters.

Thanks for the recipe!

I looked to see where my tilapia filets came from today. Some in the store were from China. I decided to get the ones from Indonesia, I don't know if their waters are better.

Today I came up with a new recipe, grilled portobello mushrooms! Mix olive oil with a splash of sesame seed oil, shake on lots of garlic powder, some thyme and some salt. Brush mushrooms with mixture then grill. It was really good! These mushroom are meaty.

That sounds great. Portabella mushrooms are one thing I've never made though I've had them at restaurants.

I cook for 2, which makes it a little more difficult since I make beef twice a week or so and don't want to go through the trouble of making seperate meals. I think it would be easy though, to make myself a Portabella mushroom burger alongside a regular beef burger for someone else, and had not thought of them.

I do have to eat one well-prepared meal a day and can't settle for snacks in replacement of dinner, though am satisfied with eating dressed up salads for dinner once a week...like grilled chicken salad with mandarin oranges, almonds, and sesame teriyaki dressing.

I have a weakness for ice cream...aside from frozen yogurt, does anyone know of good substitutes?

Halfway frozen bananas + peanut butter + yogurt is one..or can add chocolate syrup..either as a milkshake or in a bowl...

That's not very fattening on the account of the bananas..but I need more ideas.

The eggplant turned out OK. It's a little different from Chinese eggplant. I like Chinese eggplant better.

I like zucchini more than eggplant.

I bought some beef tenderloin on sale today. I saved $10/lb. I'm making steak tonight and tomorrow. Pdoc suggested I eat red meat for the iron. I'm a little low in iron. I'm going to try to eat red meat once a week on average.

Today is day 9 of healthy eating and I'm still doing well!

I've decided to not weigh myself until 1 month has passed. This is so that I will not get discouraged by slow progress. My goal is to have slow progress and weighing myself every day would be like watching hair grow. I just can't see any progress sometimes and it will discourage me. I know rationally that it shouldn't but it does.

This way, I am also concentrating less on my weight and more on my actual eating and lifestyle changes.

Anyone else trying to eat healthier and lose weight?

I'm eating it like spaghetti and hoping for the best LOL.

I think that's a great idea - don't focus on the actual weight you've lost...that can really mess with your motivation. I think it's great to focus on how you feel, and how your clothes feel - when they start to feel looser, you'll feel great! If you forget about checking your weight, you'll get a nice surprise when you eventually get around to getting on the scales!

I'm pretty sure there is an exception for journal type entries like a diet journal. Check the FAQ. Midnight and I were doing on one Health for the longest time.

As you know, I'm in terrible shape, and things keep breaking on me left and right. Now my blood sugar's going up again, and I've reluctantly decided I'd better try to be good.

So I'm *trying* to cut back on the stuff I'm not supposed to eat. Sort of like the Sugar Buster's diet, though I doubt I'll be disciplined enough to say I'm following it.

My stomach just can't handle vegetables anymore. Or at least not without Beano. And not that many. I had to reluctantly toss out my Simply Salad today. I'll never be able to eat that again.

I also did my first stint on the exercise bike in a while. My husband set me to doing such a low number of minutes and difficulty that I'm almost insulted.

I don't have your drive to succeed, but I'll try to post now and again.
