Shiny Summer Faceparts?

Posted by Glydin on July 16, 2007, at 14:43:57

I have a product endorsement.... NOTE: my experience is *I* like it and find it works, there is NO vested interest. I've been accused on the pharmaceudical area of this as I have a great like for a particular med - and No, I have NO vested interest there either. (Smile)

If there's interest in the shine buster miracle, I'll share. If not, I'll just keep it to myself.

Oh good, I always like to know I'm not the only facial grease pit.

It's by Peter Thomas Roth Skin Care and it's called Max Anti-Shine Mattifying Gel. I have used many mattifiers with "okay" results (I'm a beauty aid, uh, enthusiast), this one has, by far, given me great long lasting results without feeling heavy, cloggy or causing breakouts.

It's slightly pricey at $35.00 an oz. but a tiny amount of it goes a long way, so it lasts. I order mine from Sephoria.

I ordered it from drugstore.com.... Seeing as I drop alot with Sephoria, it was normal for me to THINK that's where I got it.

I think I will have to try out this gel because my face gets really, really oily in the summer. I use mineral powder foundation (when I actually wear my make-up); do you think these will work together?

Now that I've gotten a little ....ahem...... older, my skin is starting to change and I don't know what to do with it any more. I'm an oil slick in the summer and closer to an alligator in the winter. This poses a product shopping challenge. Or perhaps it's not a bad thing? Gives me an excuse to try a broader range of things?? hmmmm....

Have you found a cleanser you love? Right now I'm using Dermalogica's Special Cleansing Gel. It's OK, but I'm not attached. I like La Mer's cleanser for oily skin, but it's awfully expensive. And beware, if you answer this, I may pepper you with dozens of other questions. You've been warned.....

Kindred Spirits... good good!!!

Yes, I also use mineral foundation and it works well with it.

In terms of skin care, I have been thru SOOOOO many lines - high end, low end, inbetween AND utilized dermatogist products over the years. I did not get blessed with wonderful skin. (sigh) I always seem to return to Mary Kay line. I have a MK person who is not all gushy and pushy, so that's a plus. I also have been going thur the changeable skin but have retained this oily stuff with the wrinkle showup (yay). For me, consistence is an absolute. I was in a swrill for quite a while and had the: "Why care" attitude and no energy for it EVEN if I did happen to care.... Actually, thoughts of caring and taking care of the outside "temple" is a good indicator that the interior is doing well. It's only taken me a year and a half to reach some level of satisfaction.... (Smile)

Ask any questions ya want... I welcome them.

This is only tangentially related, but.. what do you think of the home microdermabrasion kits? Good or bad for the skin?

~~~ Hey Tab,
It's very related. I have to be careful with exfoliant products as they seem to make my skin more active on the oil/sebum factory causing more shine and can cause me breakout problems from irritation. I use a fine grain scrub mixed with moisturizer about once a week. The scrub I like is by Booth's and I use a clay/kaolin based mask twice a week.
Good to see you AND discussing one of my favorite topics with you !!!
Well I won't help at all by saying I got a Dyson "slim" vacuum a few weeks back and absolutely love it! I fire it up the moment I see some debris or dust, which is very unlike my normal cleaning protocol (i.e. clean when the dustbunnies reach the shame-inducement level).
And I've been having some very fluffy wavy hair lately with drugstore VO5 products. Maybe it's just the humidity, but I'm enjoying it.
I don't read it all the time, but I do get Paula Burch's beauty bulletin. She's the CosmeticsCop site, and has reviews of a lot of different products. http://cosmeticscop.com/default.asp
I don't always agree with her -- she said my powder wasn't worth the money, and I strongly disagree -- but it's often interesting. I just tried a new sunscreen based on her review -- although, I'm not sure I'm loving it...
(And if you have a recommendation for a good sunscreen/moisturizer, by all means pass it this way!)
My motto is, "When the going gets tough, the tough wear make up." Works for me!
~~~ Good girl !! You know me and the hair product talk. I was trying to find a good straightening creme and have tried from Fredic Faki to White Rain. I found out using a quarter sized dap of (I'm not kiddin') Jergen's lotion, while hair is still wet, works as well or better than anything... doesn't mess with my color, fights any frizz and my hair smells deliciously of cherry almond.

~~~ I like the therapeudic moisturizers like Complex 15, Purpose or Eucerin for general useage.
Right now, I'm with the Mary Kay stuff and I like that one too.... which is surprising as most cosmetic line moisturizers tend to be too heavy for my oily face.... even those formulated for oily or breakout proned skin types. For another goodish shine fighter plus decent moisture and drugstore available, I like Biore. As I've sung the praises of above, the Roth mattifier is da bomb for the face the glows to blinding status with oil.
If I want to pump up the sunscreen factor, I use the oil free Coppertone version.
I'll check out the site, I can't remember if I have been there before or not....
Wow, now that's original. I would never think of using hand lotion as hair anti-frizz treatment. Saves money and I'll bet it washes out a lot easier than the silicone-based gunk.
I am permanently banned from buying new makeup or beauty supplies.
Here's the rub- I've got pretty bad acne. When it's under control I've got about 3 blemishes on any given day. When it's out of control. it's OUT of CONTrOl.
ugh
I would highly highly recommend that all of you folks out there consider getting an Rx for tretinoin (retin-a). There are many different strengths available. Basically it works by increasing collagen deep down in the dermis and by increasing cell turnover. It fades dark spots (like acne scars and sun spots) and my creases from clenching my eyebrows together is GONE.
I put on a pea size mixed with moisturizer and smoothe it all over my face and neck, and the back of my hands, permitting.
The other product I use is a combination of 10% glycolic (AHA) acid and 2% hydroquinone. Again- fades age spots, acne spots and makes my complexion glow. Keeps away the flakies too. over the counter at the derm's office, about 15 dollars, lasts a couple months.
Those two products I'd recommend to anybody. Wear sunscreen though, because they increase sensitivity to sun. Why pay so much money for retinol products if your health insurance will cover your wrinkle (and acne) cure?
On days when my skin feels "normal, flaky or dry" I use principal secret (yes. I ordered it from TV) 'reclaim' line. It's mild and has really gentle and rich moisturizers. good creamy cleanser, GREAT night cream and it doesn't cause or aggravate breakouts. On difficult days I use neutrogena cleansing gel with 2% salicylic acid. gentle but better at deep pore cleansing.
the simple washcloth works wonders.
mineral foundation- I love it, but usually need concealer to hide the boo boos. my favorite concealer is the palette from Sonia Kashuk at Target. I'm about to run out of my second one. Having different colors to blend really helps, because I can't use the same shade to hide eye purplies AND blemish blotchies.
While moving I noticed that I had amassed roughly 10 cubic feet of shower/face/hair products and related accoutrements. Now I must halt the buying spree and use what I have (sigh)...
Hi Racer, for a combo moisturizer & sunscreen, or moisturizer alone, I wanted to recommend the Kinerase line. From what I know, Kinerase is one of the few products besides Retin-A/tretinoin (latter by prescription only) that has solid objective scientific research behind its ability to go deep enough to turn cells over, permanently improve fine lines & blotchiness, etc. (You can read about it at their own site, kinerase.com, or many unrelated unbiased sources to be sure.) It's expensive but one tube lasts me quite a long time.
Unlike tretinoin (generic, cheaper, active ingredient in Retin-A), while Kinerase works slower, it also doesn't cause peeling, redness or any of that initial stuff. Gentle enough to be used immediately after surgeries like laser resurfacing, and sometimes specifically prescribed for conditions like rosacea. The products come in cream or lotion form -- I use the lotion, as I don't need extra moisturization, and the lotion feels light and definitely non-greasy yet isn't too thin.
I think it's been proven that moisturizers in themselves do not do anything to permanently improve/prevent; that they only make the skin LOOK smoother, especially under makeup. On the other hand there is another lesser-heard theory that if the skin is left tight and that causes a line, it will be more likely to become permanent over time than if moisturizer was on it keeping it soft. That's neither here nor there really, but the point is that I like using Kinerase as my moisturizer since I know it's doing double duty, by not only immediately improving the look of the skin but going deeper to produce actual positive changes.
Digression: because you mentioned occasionally reading Paula the cosmetic cop's reviews, I couldn't resist having a look at what she had to say about Kinerase, even tho long ago I came to the conclusion that while she comes off intelligent and "scientific," she is IMHO highly biased and there to push her own products. In her passing reference to Kinerase she seems to dismiss it, saying that the active ingredient in it, kinetin, was originally so hyped and expensive but is now even available at Body Shop and Almay for cheap. But the fact is that the knock off products don't have near the same concentration of it that Kinerase does. And I don't see her "superior" products ("Paula's Choice" brand, what might that tell us lol) making it onto the shelves of thousands of skin specialist doctors and surgeons nation or world wide. ;-)
Anyway. Kinerase is sold at many dermatologist's and plastic surgeon's offices, or can be found at online stores (I would never order something like this from eBay though). Here is a link to a site I have ordered from many times. If they aren't currently offering free shipping, often you can surf for a coupon. The line has expanded greatly since it first came out, but I've only tried the plain original face lotion.
http://www.skinstore.com/store/category.asp?catID=7612
Another digression, and in a different category (most definitely not a sunscreen, and not a moisturizer per se, altho it improves skin's ability to hold "good" beneficial moisture, as opposed to oil): For general skin improvement, I was left speechless at how much tretinoin changed my skin. *EVERYONE* noticed. Even my derm was blown away, and she hadn't even been the one who prescribed it for me; along with other of my docs. And for the first time ever I get compliments on my skin even from strangers. All that, even as a former long-time sun worshipper and still-smoker, "of a certain age."
A lot of people don't realize this, but you *can* put it all the way to the lash lines of your eyes, to smooth and tighten the eyelid skin too. Heck, you can even put it on your lower arms, legs, chest, etc. if you have sun damage there. But in that case, only a couple times a week, in the lower concentration product. Strangely, it is more likely to cause irritation in those places than face.
For my face, actually I began by using the Obagi "Nu-Derm" program, which combines tretinoin, hydroquinone (skin "bleach") and an AHA/glycolic acid. Also available at many doc's offices. (To keep the cost of it down, you could really stick to just those three products out of the line.) But now I pretty much just use .05% tretinoin several times per week, and am way beyond any of the initial side effects of peeling, etc.
Anyone who wishes to skip the initial peelies & irritation may want to stick with that lower strength from the start.
(Dang I did not expect this post to become so long! But I should know better. ;)
Confuzyq, you've always had great skincare advice!
I find after (cough, cough) years of being on this earth, that I prefer The Sothys (spa) skin care line, though it's really priced out of my range. I have a little jar of their Oxyliance moisturizer cream that I'm trying to make last for as long as I can. It has no sunscreen so I don't use it during the day at all.
I use Vaniqa cream (by prescription) on my moustache and pesky chinny-chin-chin hairs that now crop up. Thanks increasingly for nuthin, estrogen. I use the cream at night and it suppresses the growth of hair. Much better than any other short term hair removal I've tried.
For cleansing I like to use something water based with AHA in it to keep my skin looking brighter. At the moment I'm using an Aveeno foaming cleanser which works well.
Day time moisturizer - I am still looking for a good high SPF one that doesn't feel like spackle on my face. Not happy with the Neutrogena tinted moisturizer I'm currently using, but it's SPF30 which is necessary for Florida, unless I want to look like I actually live here. Which I do. I perspire an awful lot, so I mostly use water-proof makeup products when I do wear makeup. At least they stay put for the day instead of smearing all over the place.
I'm going to be 45 this year and my oily skin from my youth is morphing into kinda-sorta-normal skin. Acne was endured for 20 years until at age 32, when I took a 6-month treatment of oral Accutane. It cured it completely and was a horrendous medication to take. Thank goodness for the NHS.
Hi CS,
Your smell comment made me laugh because just recently a friend and I were discussing beauty related smellish situations - concluding that "back in the day" if you picked around the same time to use Nair to defur and got a perm for the lovely stylish chemical curls, it smelled as if you had been embalmed...... for days.
Hey ClearSkies,
How does it work? Does it actually stop hairs from growing at all?
I'm wondering if it'd be a good "bikini line" solution since shaving bumps are a problem for me.
