Going on a trip alone

Posted by Deneb on March 7, 2007, at 22:24:08

Anyone do this?

Anyone go on trips alone?

I'm thinking of going to San Diego because Dr. Bob is going there in May and Babblers might have a party there.

If people don't have a party there I still might go. I think I should go or else I might regret it.

I've been wanting to see California again for some time now. Should I go?

I also want to say hi to Dr. Bob, if he lets me.

I want to plan my trip now. It gives me something to look forward to. Knowing I will go on the trip will also motivate me to find a job quickly, so I'll have more money to spend.

When do you think I should buy plane tickets and book a bed at the hostel?

Deneb I think you are changing your mind too quickly and that you should take time to think about this. Yes I've gone on trips by myself but always with a purpose ie a test. Love Phillipa

Thinking about wanting some extra money for the trip has motivated me to apply to 4 more jobs just now. :-)

I think I'm going. :-)

I want to have an adventure. I'm going. My purpose is to explore a city and have fun. Doing things on my own will build my confidence.

I'm going. I'm going. Dr. Bob, I'm going. Can I say Hi to you? :-)

I think I'll go for a week. I think I'll visit Mexico too. Ooooh, it'll be so exciting!

I'm going to start planning my trip.

I go on trips all the time by myself. I quite like it actually! I once took a train all the way from England to Portual (and back) all by myself, although I did meet up with an ex-boyfriend in Portugal. I went through France, Spain and it took 3 days!

Kind regards

It's good to know other people go on trips alone! I don't feel so weird about it now. Did you explore on your own? Or did you just pass through them?

Yes I stayed a couple of nights in paris and I had 12 hours to kill in Northern Spain so I went to Bilbao to see the Guggenheim there.

I've been on lots of other trips myself too (Germany, Switzerland and Italy) But I do find it easy to meet new people and I know how to look after myself well, paritculary in certain situations. I'm not naive and I think it helps that I'm 5'10!

do it!!!!

i haven't gone alone, met up with people before (flown to a different country alone (scary! as i don't particularly enjoy flying)) but never really traveled alone. but, i think it would be so exciting. and, you already know the language. it'd allow you to do your own thing, make your own agenda and do whatevery you rwant.

do some research and find otu what interests you beforehand.

go for it deneb and have fun. besides, you may have mister bob all to yourself, you lucky lady you!

get excited and do it!

I don't find it easy to meet new people. I need to practice that. I think I can look after myself, but I'm not sure. I've never lived alone before. I did go to Toronto all by myself and I was fine. I think I can be a little naive. What are some things I should watch out for?

My Mom doesn't like the idea of me going by myself. I can't do this without her because I don't have a credit card. I need a credit card to book rooms and flight.

I don't have a job right now. I'll never get a credit card.

My Mom said it's no fun going by myself. She told me about the time we went on tour to Disneyland and stuff and there was this woman who was by herself and kept following us. My Mom found that annoying. I wouldn't do that though. I wouldn't follow strangers.

She said if I go by myself I will be like a crazy person. Those were her words. Crazy. I can't tell her about wanting to see Bob, she'll think I was even crazier. She wouldn't understand. Only Babblers understand about Bob.

She's really against me going. Wah, I wanna see Bob! I need a credit card! I need a job.

Oh PLEASE! I travel by myself ALL the time - both for business and pleasure and people don't think I'm crazy - in fact I've met some really great people on my travels that I still keep in touch with to this day.

However, when you go to San Diego, I would not recommend going to Mexico by yourself. I would try to recruit some fellow babblers to go with you.

I also have a standing policy that I stay in hotels, no hostels, no homes, no parks, but good reputable hotels. I feel safer that way.

Do you have a bank account? With most bank accounts you can get a check card that works just like a credit card.

You'll find a job. Just keep looking.

How come? Is it unsafe in Mexico?

I've stayed in a hostel before. It was a good experience. I don't want to spend a lot of money on a hotel.

Yes I have a bank account. I'm going to ask about getting a check card. Thanks.

I just applied to about 9 jobs. I hope I get one!

Oooh, I'm so excited. I think I will go, now that I know about check cards.

Deneb the part of Mexico near California is not safe, and you must stay in a hotel in the states for the same reason it's not like Canada or Europe. And Maddie is right about the bank card. Love Phillipa

Are hostels really unsafe in the U.S.? I don't think I will go if I need to stay in a hotel. It's too expensive to stay at a hotel. Please tell me hostels are safe in the states.

I'm having second thoughts about this. What if I get too tired? Sometimes I don't feel like getting out of bed. What do I do then?

Maybe my Mom is right. I shouldn't go alone. Maybe I should save my money for a trip I can take with a friend.

I don't know anymore.

No! I think you should go alone! You need to be sensible thats all. I wouldn't recommend going to Mexico either by yourself. But San Diego would be fine I'm guessing.

As for hostels, I think they're fine - well anyway, America must have these accredited 'youth hostels'. Yes they do I just looked them up:

http://www.iyhf.org/

I've stayed in these hostels all over europe and they're totally fine, safe, often very nice. They have the little blue hut symbol.

Actually I think I feel far safer in a hostel than in a hotel, particulary those ones in the link above. I've never ever had a bad experience in a youth hostel - only nice experiences!

Another tip I would say is to buy a guidebook to San Diego - like a 'Rough Guide' or something like that. They'll usually list good hostels/hotels/b&bs etc and offer impartial advice. I find these guide books are indispensible when I'm travelling. They'll come with maps and underground maps and really useful things.

Hmmm. I'm sure you can get a credit card - although the limits might not be very high.

I would really stress to your mother how this trip will give you something to look forward to, how it will build your confidence, and able you to become a more mature individual. Point out to her that business people travel by themselves all the time! And anyway you're going to *meet* people. Some of my best experiences in my life have been whilst travelling.

And I've never lived on my own either, so don't let that hold you back!!

Kind regards

Meri

Here I even found the info for you on the site for the San Diego youth hostels. There's two, one downtown and one at Point Loma (whatever that is!)

Downtown:

Point Loma:
http://www.iyhf.org/dba/hostel060023.en.htm?n=n

They both look very nice!

Thanks Meri!

I just went to the bank and applied for a secured VISA. I think I want to go. :-) I'll find out tomorrow whether or not I'll be accepted. If I get accepted I can build some credit!

Ooooh, it'll be so exciting! I'll start looking for a good guidebook.

I think I will skip Mexico if it's unsafe. I'm going to read everything I can about solo travelling safety.

Oooooh, I'm so excited!

I want to go!

I have to stay safe. Is San Diego safe?

Well, I have no idea if San Diego is particulary safe or not, but I assume its rather similar to other large US cities. That is, there will be 'bad' neighbourhoods and areas that you should definately avoid, and things like that. And you know, you should probably observe the usual sort of rules about going out late at night on your own, wear relatively modest clothing, don't flash any expensive electronic things around, watch your purse etc etc. Just normal sensible stuff. But then again, I've only ever been to Boston in the US, and I'm not sure to what degree San Diego has public transport etc etc and how much you'd have to (perhaps?) reply on a car. Although I'm sure its fine - the hostel websites and guidebooks should be able to tell you all this.

Oh and those hostels I posted a link to earlier are reowned for being safe and family oriented type places. Some unacreditied places I've stayed in have catered for the more party driven back packer and are possibly abit less nice.

Check out your local library for guidebooks.

Good luck!

Kind regards

Hey! hehe, you don't have to be a 'youth' to stay in one anymore. I think they started out that way in the 1920s or something, but definately not in this day and age!!!! So you could stay in one too.

I had to tell her about Dr. Bob because she was asking why we had to meet in San Diego.

She was immediately distrusting of Dr. Bob's motives, thinking he is out to take advantage of people. I showed her a picture of Dr. Bob and my Mom said there are a lot of bad doctors and lawyers out there, especially ones who are Chinese. It's sad, but I think my Mom is racist.

She said I shouldn't meet with people who go to a site like Babble. She said I need to make "normal" friends, not friends with "problems". She doesn't want me going to meet people from Babble.

I asked her if it would have been better for me to lie instead of telling her the truth. She told me I didn't need to tell her everything.

I told her I'm probably more disordered than a lot of Babblers, but she is still afraid.

Ugh. What do I do now?

I don't know if I should spend the money to go anymore. My Mom told me she really wants to go to China, but she can't because she spent all her money on me and my sister's education.

Now she has me feeling guilty.

I think I need to find a job and repay my parents. I need to take my Mom to China.
