Oh PLEASE! I travel by myself ALL the time - both for business and pleasure and people don't think I'm crazy - in fact I've met some really great people on my travels that I still keep in touch with to this day.
However, when you go to San Diego, I would not recommend going to Mexico by yourself. I would try to recruit some fellow babblers to go with you.
I also have a standing policy that I stay in hotels, no hostels, no homes, no parks, but good reputable hotels. I feel safer that way.
Do you have a bank account? With most bank accounts you can get a check card that works just like a credit card.
You'll find a job. Just keep looking.
