I got a job offer!!

Posted by wishingstar on January 30, 2007, at 17:39:28

I am awesome! What a boost to the self-esteem!

The man from the first interview, the intensive in-home counseling job, called today. He asked me if I was sitting down (hah) and offered me the position! He offered me $15/hr, which I think is great. It's part time, but likely would be full time with benefits starting in July. I called Ginny immediately and told her. She was happy for me. I told him I'd have to let him know in a day or 2, so Ginny and I are going to discuss it on Thurs before I decide. As I wrote before, this job has a ton of responsbility and stress and I'm not 100% sure I'm up for it. But I'm definitely feeling excited right now.

I'm still going to call the hospital I interviewed at, probably tomorrow, and tell them the situation. I hate to be pushy and call asking for a decision only 2 days later, but as Ginny pointed out on the phone... what's the worst that can happen, they wont hire me? I already have something else to fall back on.

:)

Congratulations! -and to think you almost cancelled.

It does sound like it could be stressful, but since it is part-time at first, you have some time to grow into the job.

I'm also really not certain that there is such a thing as a job without stress.

Wishingstar congrats. I agree with Ginny what do you have to lose and they may make an offer sooner if they know you are in that high of a demand. Love Phillipa

Wishingstar-- Congratulations. How wonderful.

Call the hospital-- there's nothing pushy about it-- that's what people do when they have a job offer, and would like to know if another place might want a chance to hire them, before they're unavailable.

They might thank you for giving them the opportunity to consider you before you accept the other job!

seriously, it's great.

Honore has an excellent point - they ought to appreciate the opportunity to make you a timely offer, rather than just turning them down cold. If you later go for a job at the hospital again it might help if they remember you gave them that chance.

Once again, congratulations... and yes, you ARE awesome!

thank you everyone!

Thanks everyone! I was on a great high this afternoon after getting the phone call. I'm floating back to reality now, but it was a great evening.

I'm proud of myself for pulling it together enough to go to a job interview and GET THE JOB while pretty much in crisis, while being on the brink of hospitalization. Even if I decide I cant handle it and dont take the position (I havent decided yet), that's pretty neat that I did it. I dont know if that feeling will last, but for now, I'm happy for me. The reality of the situation is starting to set in though and the questions about whether or not I'm really capable of this. I hope so.

I will call the hospital tomorrow and see if I can get an answer out of them. And yes mair, you're right - there's no job without stress. Definitely different degrees though. I'll probably be okay either way. I just want to make the right decision.

Thanks everyone. :) I'll let you know what I decide.

Hi Wishingstar,

I'm so happy for you. You'e under so much less pressure when you call the hospital because you have a job already. Yes, there's still stress, but not nearly as much.

And guess what - if they're interested in you at the hospital, they'll appreciate you letting them know BEFORE you accept the other job.

Yayyyyyy luv, Kath

Very true. I'm 95% sure I'm going to accept the job that I was offered. I havent heard from the hospital yet, and I didnt call them either, because I pretty much decided on this one. I see Ginny tomorrow morning so I'm going to wait and talk to her about it just to make sure I'm not missing any major things I should be thinking about it, but I'm planning to call and accept the position after my session. :)

I took the job

I just called and told them I'll take it. I start Feb 12. The first week is all training - CPR, first aid, crisis stuff, etc. Then who knows. I called the human resources person and shes supposed to call me back with all the info I need.

I'm really not sure if I feel good about this, but I'm trying to stay positive. I can always quit if I cant handle it, right?

Yes, you can definitely quit if you don't like it.

There's always the initial 'learning curve' part of any job. It can feel exciting, overwhelming, interesting, all kinds of things! To be fair to the job & yourself, it's good if you can know that for the first, say 6 weeks or so, you might feel different from how you're going to feel after that initial period. & obviously that period can be much shorter for some people.

I'm pleased for you. luv, Kath

Good point Kath. My therapist had suggested I set an amount of time and promsie myself I wont quit until it's over, but I'd forgotten. I'm going to say 6 weeks after the initial week of training. So that's 7 weeks total. That will give it a fair chance and I can do anything for 6 weeks. That makes me feel a little more in control. Thanks for suggesting it. :)

I'm glad you have a plan. :)

Oddly, I often feel more anxious once I make a decision. (Maybe that's why I procrastinate). I'm not altogether sure why that is.

Here's hoping that you enjoy it, and find fulfillment there.

Congrats WS

I'm someone who has stubbornly worked (or at least went to work) through some very low periods. I know how hard it is to get the whole job thing right, particularly since my job is the source of most of my major depression triggers. Working has always been pretty much of a financial necessity so thinking about quitting is something of an indulgence. However, even if I didn't have to work, I think it would have been better for me to work particularly when I was at my depressed-worst. When I'm feeling stronger, I can think of all kinds of worthwhile and enjoyable things I could be doing if I wasn't working. When I'm deeply depressed, the only alternative to work is sitting around my house obsessing about how depressed I am. This is an unappealing prospect and probably for me, pretty dangerous too. No matter how tough it is to work when you're really depressed and how easily overwelmed you can become, sometimes all those work pressures divert you from thinking all those worst depressive thoughts. That's not such a bad thing.

Not only can you give yourself the six weeks-- which makes lots of sense--

remember-- pre-new-job jitters are perfectly normal and expectable.

Plus knowing CPR is great.

You've always got Ginny to talk things over with, no matter how it goes.

Thanks everyone for your support. :) It's nice to have someone to share the excitement (and other stuff too) with.

I think you're right mair... at least that's what I'm hoping for. I hope that it keeps me busy enough to ward off the worst of the depression. But I'm just afraid it'll backfire. Sometimes when I get overwhelmed I dive head-first into feeling suicidal (or more suicidal anyway). But I'm not going to go in expecting that. Dont want to jinx it.

My one big fear is that this could conflict with seeing Ginny twice a week like I have been. I am NOT ready to cut down to once a week. Not at all. My Tues appt is actually cancelled the first week I'm working, so I guess that's good... good because I wouldnt be going anyway so I'm not missing anything. But I really cant imagine not seeing her Thurs of that week either. The job will be part time and the hours are flexible so I think I can work around it once I settle into the job, but I think the first week may be 8 hour days. I'm not sure. I know it seems dumb - it's only one week - but I'm scared. I HAVE to see her that week. Hopefully the person will call me back and tell me the exact training hours tomorrow and then I'll know for sure.
