Glasses or contact lenses?

Why?

Both. Or neither. Depending on how well I need to see.

Both, but mainly contacts.

With glasses, I have trouble with things like walls bending, and depth perception, plus photosensitivity. Heavy astigmatism, so contacts give me much better visual acuity. And I get a slight tint to them, which helps with the photosensitivity.

And I need something almost all the time. I can sleep without them, but otherwise...

Hi llrrrpp,

I mainly wear contacts. I needed glasses in fourth grade to see the board. My teacher insisted that I (and every kid who wore glasses) wear them all the time. The minute I could convince my parents and my eye doctor that I was old enought for contacts I got them and pun intended never looked back.

I wish I had the money for laser eye surgery (and liposuction...)

Glasses.

I just can't stick my finger in my eye. I tried and failed and wasted all that contact money and a trip to the ER to get the dang thing out.

I've grown to like the protection glasses offer. I get the kind that gets darker in the sun.

Plus, my eyes are really ugly, and I'd just as soon they be hidden.

I got Laser corrective surgery for distance. For years I tried to get used to bifocals couldn't do it. And if you factor in the price of frames and lenses it pays for itself in a year or two. I paid $l000 for each eye and don't regret it. The military doses it for free. At least the Marines do. Love Phillipa

I so want to get that done, but I think that my eyes may be changing too fast for me to qualify. Plus I'm afraid of being left with the halo effect.

I can't wear bifocals either. They make me queasy. I switch back and forth in my glasses.

My vision is too bad for laser surgery. I could do it, but I'd still need glasses with a pretty heavy correction. My opthalmologist has said he'd do cataract surgery on me, to implant prosthetic lenses, so that's in my future. He says that will correct it entirely, but that it's expensive, etc. Not gonna happen quite yet, but I do kinda look forward to getting cataracts now, so that insurance will cover it... {shakes head} How's that for sick?

Liposuction, though...

Does laser surgery mean you don't need bifocals?

How does that work? I thought it just gave you essentially 20/20 vision-- but you'd need bifocals anyway?

I only wear contacts when I'm skiing, or swimming, or need to wear sunglasses or look beautiful.

The rest of the time, I settle for looking nerdy and saving 3 minutes every morning, and having to ignore the rims

BUT my glasses are kick *ss. I get lots of compliments

Mine are Buddy Holly glasses. At least Buddy Holly according to the movie.

I get comments on them. They're so uncool, they're almost cool.

I've always wanted those glasses that socialists or anarchists used to wear- -

What are yours like?

My glasses have dark metalic rims, and are kind of geometric with black plastic temple pieces (skinny) prominantly displaying the name of an Italian fashion house. The inside of the temple pieces is a translucent avocado green. In the sun the metal frames betray their true color- a deep dark green. But in everyday light they look black.

I tried on everything in the store, and these looked the best on me. It took me a long time to get used to the fact that people would look at me and think that I was into fashion designers. One of my professors even said _______? you're wearing _____? Apparently this was necessary to interrupt a meeting where my dept chair was asking me about data analyses. Mortifying.

I like your cool glasses, Jost. You're so different that you're cool again- and that's pretty close to anarchist/socialist fashion statements.

No you have choices you can correct distance and glasses for reading althought my prescription is weaker now. Or choose reading and wear glasses for distance. Or some lucky people's brain gets used to having one eye corrected for distance one for reading. I tried a contact to see if I cold stand it. I hated it. Now my distand is 20/l5. So now I see imperfections I never saw before. Love Phillipa

Started out with glasses in elementary school. Got contacts in junior high and wore them into my 40s. Then allergies and dry eyes did me in. My eyes are borderline too bad for lasik. My doc said the cataract thing would fix me, too. But my parents are in their late 70s and still don't need surgery! I'm not holding my breath.

My husband DID have cataract surgery, and he sees great. He opted for perfect far vision and over the counter cheap reading glasses.

My glasses are sort of fashionable, too. They are DKNY (totally not my usual style)and a purple metallic that looks black. Sort of a geometric shape. I hate glasses because I feel like there is a barrier between me and the world. And I have beautiful green eyes. Also I can't see near as well as I did with contacts.

Racer, if you get cataracts, DO NOT get the multifocal lenses that claim to correct for both distance and near vision. The eye doctor will lie and say they work. Maybe they do for some people. For me, they were a huge uncorrectable mistake. (Uncorrectable, because it's far more dangerous to take them out then to put them in). I want to tell everyone, the ReStor cataract lenses should NEVER have been approved by the FDA and should be banned. Cecilia

Glasses for nerdy days. Contacts for purdy days

Or: Glasses for days with lots of computer work (otherwise eyes dry out)

Contacts for days with lots of sunshiny outdoors activities (otherwise no room for sunglasses)

Glasses for days when I want to hide, or look intellectually fancy.

Contacts for days when I want to show my eyelashes off.

*reposting for days when the world wants to confirm that nobody cares about this thread...

That's pretty much how I decide about my glasses and contacts. Sometimes, though, I get tired of my glasses sliding down my nose, probably from oily skin, so I might put my contacts in later in the day even on "nerdy" days.

One of these days, I might get prescription sunglasses. But for now it's contacts or squint.

When you get a new glasses prescription, you can have the older pair turned into prescription sunglasses, with UVA and UVB protection, for about $30.

That's neat about turning old glasses into sunglasses.

I hate my glasses. I can't decide if it's because they don't fit-- too big-- and therefore slide down my nose-- or because the lenses are always smudged and I can't see anything,--or the prescription was lousy, which it was (or the lenses were badly made--which they were).

Anyway, I'm always taking them off, and putting them down--somewhere--

and then I spend ages going around, saying, Where are my glasses??.... do you know what I did with my glasses... ( no answer),.... where are... hey-- do you have any idea what I could've done with my glasses???

Which is really frustrating.

Jost
