Faux finishes for walls

Posted by Wildflower on September 7, 2004, at 10:17:04

From reading this board, I know that there are many PB domestic divas out there. I just happen to be a domestic disaster... I'm the one that figured out the hard way not to bend over while painting a closet. I've got two white butt marks on the back of my black shorts to prove it. ;-)

Anyway, I'm renovating my bathroom and I've discovered that the walls in my bathroom are uneven (they're plaster versus drywall) and painting them a solid color will only enhance the flaws. The paint store mentioned that faux finishing may be my only bet but it looks pretty complicated.

Have any of you tried sponging or ragging on any of your walls? Is it hard? Easy? Tips?

HELP!

I'm no diva and no heir to the Martha throne, but I did try sponge painting a small bathroom years ago. I picked a very pale blue, painted it over all the walls, then mixed in a bunch of white into the same paint, and splotched on the walls with a big sea sponge. It ended up looking like fluffy clouds.

I say, experiment on one wall, then go for it. I think you can get really fancy with finishes and expensive options, but I'm too poor to be anything but cheap and sometimes chic.

p.s. Ralph Lauren makes an outrageously priced paint that has a faux suede look to it built in. You can buy it at Home Despot.

Hi Wildflower. A friend of mine "wallpapered" her small half-bathroom with lots of covers from THE NEW YORKER magazine. She'd been saving them for years for that purpose and finally created her masterpiece. It's fun going to the bathroom at her house!

Easier than sponging or ragging.

Get yourself a woolie. I used one in my bathroom and it looks great. You'll need the special roller pan for it, too. I got mine at a paint store, but I have seen them at Home Depot lately.

I just noticed they have more products now. Cool beans.

I used the 2 part roller

I must have a thing about only being able to decorate bathrooms. In my condo half bathroom I put up postcards from all over Florida from the 70's and earlier. Way cool. Some are written on and mailed, some are those hotel postcards (remember when every hotel had their own?) I got them from an uncle who didn't throw anything away before he died.

Tiling a wall in newspaper and/or postcards is such a good idea but it won't really go with my ultra-modern looking bathroom. I love ecletic things so I've *created* a bathroom (OK, so I had a little help from IKEA) with brushed steel accents, glass shelves and a geometric design shower curtain.

Keep your fingers crossed and I'll let you know how it goes...

I'm so jealous you have access to an Ikea store! We don't have them down here. :(
You'll have to take a picture.

Don't be jealous...I drove 2.5 hours to get to one. I just hope that the sink fits on the vanity. I bought both of them there but you just never know...

I'll take some pictures as soon as its done.

Just thought I'd give you an update... I finished sponging the walls this weekend. Started with a base of white and then added pale sky blue and light gray. It came out the way it was supposed to but to me it looks like bad 60's wallpaper --wretched. I'll be repainting the walls a solid color tonight and tomorrow. The heck with trying to hide the flaws with texturing!

I can't cook, I obviously can't envision a paint scheme and I keep breaking everything that I touch. I should have never bought a house...I'm a domestic disaster. :'-(

I keep my efforts really, really easy and simple, because I do not have a flair except for shopping. Never ask me to help you put up wallpaper, or grout tile, or (shudder) stencil anything.

My walls are beige. I may get brave and put a colour up someday on some walls, and might even try sponge painting again.

How about trying out different colours and layers on a small patch of wall to see what the effect looks like? Or even ask one of those Home Depot people about it (I think they have free classes too).

Don't give up, you'll get your home looking the way you want!
