I'm no diva and no heir to the Martha throne, but I did try sponge painting a small bathroom years ago. I picked a very pale blue, painted it over all the walls, then mixed in a bunch of white into the same paint, and splotched on the walls with a big sea sponge. It ended up looking like fluffy clouds.

I say, experiment on one wall, then go for it. I think you can get really fancy with finishes and expensive options, but I'm too poor to be anything but cheap and sometimes chic.

p.s. Ralph Lauren makes an outrageously priced paint that has a faux suede look to it built in. You can buy it at Home Despot.
