I keep my efforts really, really easy and simple, because I do not have a flair except for shopping. Never ask me to help you put up wallpaper, or grout tile, or (shudder) stencil anything.
My walls are beige. I may get brave and put a colour up someday on some walls, and might even try sponge painting again.
How about trying out different colours and layers on a small patch of wall to see what the effect looks like? Or even ask one of those Home Depot people about it (I think they have free classes too).
Don't give up, you'll get your home looking the way you want!
