Lost in Translation

Have you seen the movie, "Lost in Translation"? If so, what did you think of it?

I really liked it. Subtle, gentle, sweet, and beautifully filmed. I had a couple of business trips in Tokyo, and it really is so alien, so it was particularly interesting from that point of view. I think Bill Murray is a great comic actor.
What did you think?

I loved it too. What a sweet and real relationship between the two characters.

Another good depiction of alienation in Tokyo is _Enlightenment Guaranteed_. It's about two Germans who end up lost and homeless in Tokyo on their way to a Buddhist retreat. Your video rental place might have it. Not as warm and wonderful as Lost in Translation but has really good visuals of Tokyo.

Loved the movie, saw it in a theater. I find my experience enhanced by the big screen, sound and all the people. The viewing we went was packed. It felt like a community experience. The humor was so understated of course till the scene with the exercise machine...purely slap-stick. Lots of laughs, tender moments and a lot of loneliness. He felt more like her dad than a sexual partner. I guess the passionate kiss at the end made me a little squimish.
what did you think?

I loved it!!!

One of the best movies I've seen this year, along with American Splendor and Big Fish (Oh, and I just love me that Tim Burton!!!)

It kinda reminds you that even when you're completely lost and not sure of anything anymore, you're not the only one.... And even though you can't stay friends with that person forever, physically, what you learned from that person can stay with you forever...

With that description, I'm going to watch it tonight!

I loved Big Fish as well... what a mind that Mr. Burton has!

Good lord, it reads like the tag line or something... Tell me I'm worth more than advertising, PLEASE!!!! But, that description does fit it entirely~! It's great, and Bill Murray,, Oh if I see that man, I'm sure to be arrested but they'll have to pry my naked body from his leg... Like a dog baby, like a dog!

i didn't like it so much

thought it was pointless, meandering in the middle, half an hour too long, and slow

could have used more plot development

but what can i say, i'm a movie snob! haven't seen a really good movie yet this year. last year's greatest hits were The Station Agent and Intolerable Cruelty

I was very disappointed. I know, it has gotten rave reviews. And I know it's supposed to be an artsy sort of film and not much plot and all and people think that is why I didn't like it. I have LOVED some of the wierdest, plotless-est, funky sorts of films before, and I gotta tell you, that's not the problem. I just didn't like this one. Sure, it has a few good moments in it--a few funny bits and a few artistic images, etc.. But it is dreadfully endless and full of overstimulating travelogue type scenes of Tokyo in all its neon glory or shall I say garrishness? (note to self--don't go to Tokyo)--although the Kyoto scenes weren't bad--and absolutely way too long sequences of boring scenes of drunken off key Karioke partying. And neither character got me hooked at all. It really did nothing for me. And in the end it goes for a 'touch-of-Hollywood' cliche ending, albeit a subtle form of it, but still cliche.

In sum I didn't like it and give it a thumbs down.

That was the reaction of one of the people I saw it with--she was reacting to it especially since Scarlett Johansen, who is really only 17 or so, did not look the age the character was supposed to be.

One that I loved from last year was Punch Drunk Love. I saw it in the theater last year and just rented it recently and loved it just as much the second time.

Punch Drunk Love did nothing for me. I really like Emily Watson, but yuck. I had almost the same reaction to that one that you described for Lost In Translation. I wonder if it's in-theater versus home-rental? I think maybe the slow meandering plotless films are more absorbing to me on the big screen. (I saw LIT at the theater but rented PDL)

Well, I guess that I have to say that I'm with the dissenting camp. I watched about 40 minutes of the movie, and couldn't seem to find the part that made me want to keep watching.
I have seen at least one good movie this year... Whale Rider. I also liked Finding Nemo, and was re-acquainted with some old favorites; namely The Ghost and Mrs Muir, Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail. Oh yeah, The Four Feathers is good.
I think we're demonstrating though, how different we all are. I don't think that 'goodness' is a quantifiable aspect of anything. Those who like it will do so, and those who don't will not.
Dee.

Tab,

I agree--sometimes a film is better on one screen vs. another. For LIT, I saw it on big screen, obviously, as it is recent. PDL I saw first on large screen and then a few weeks ago on my 19" TV screen. I liked it both ways.

I just rented Whale Rider and enjoyed it, too. And I learned something new--a bit about the Maori culture that I'd never been exposed to before.

(sheepishly) I haven't seen any on your list. I need to get out more.

I loved the movie "Funny Bones". It never made it in the theaters, really. It closed soon after it opened. But what a fantastic film--it was really satisfying to me.

I have others but I am so drowsy now I can't remember them... that's what happens when the nightime meds kick in....LOL

I received Rabbit proof fence and Whalerider for Christmas, and was hesitant to watch, as I knew I'd end up crying.... They were FABULOUS!

My favs...

Uturn
Slingblade
The Man Who Wasn't There
Christmas Vacation and Fletch (Oh, Mr. Chevy Chase... If you only knew)
Life is Beautiful
Death to Smoochy (Ed Norton's in it LaLa)

And there's one with Bjork in it... I can't recall the name.. It's a musical of sorts... Very sad, but at the same time, her character lives in a world of beauty. It's just great.

* I remember that movie....what was the name of that? She ended up being hanged...I wept. It took me a long time to get over the film. She was such a powerful actress. Her songs are so orginal and inspiring.

Hello. Thanks for all of your interesting comments and observations on "Lost in Translation." Someone told me that Bill Murray's character, Bob Harris, might have been modeled on Harrison Ford. I liked the movie a lot, but not as much as most of the movie critics did. I think that most movies are over-hyped anyway. I guess that's how they sell them.

So, what do you think Bob Harris (Bill Murray) said to Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) when he whispered in her ear at the end of the movie?
