for all the freaky folk---just wondering..

Posted by dreamerz on February 9, 2003, at 0:15:36

This sounds nuts but..
Does anyone else sense-feel that they are continually dreaming in the background in waking state(I don't mean daydreaming)-not quite aware but feel an ambience a continuall trickle into consciousness , a sudden flash of an image too quick to catch . Also even if not sleepy.
It's like when you try and search for a word and feel like it's on the tip of the tongue you almost catch it but just cannot access it.
Sometimes I get images that I can 'see' that are useful creatively ~ so religious people /spiritual would say it's the third eye thing. Also I have a little synesthesia(senses mixed up)the number 5 is my brother's face for example .
The background dreaming thing happens everyday for me it can affect my mood and just be damn annoying , is it the norm?

Questions.. When these "feelings" happen, does it seem to happen more than once, like in clusters? Does it go away for a while, then come back? Do you have maybe several a day, or a week, then none for a while, then it starts up again?

Did this just start recently, or have you had these "feelings" for a while?

Just wondering because I have been diagnosed as having temporal lobe epilepsy (about 8 yrs. ago). It can give one some pretty strange symptoms, and be very annoying. When I was being diagnosed, the only way I could describe the way I felt during my "spells", was that I would be awake, but felt like I was in a dream, and some slight out of body experience (depersonalization). I sometimes get this really strang intense deja vu feeling. Some symptoms are just beyond words, I couldn't describe them if I wanted too!!!

I don't mean to scare you, just when I hear (or read) about someone having your type of feelings, or similar, I always suggest TLE. I had no idea what was wrong with me when I was younger, before I ever told anyone about my "spells". I thought I was going nuts.

I could be totally...whats the word I'm looking for (thinking, well typing out loud) going in the wrong direction with this. I still never thought of the specific word I was wanting to use. Like you said, its on the tip of the tongue, but it just won't come out. Frustrating...

Keep me updated

Jodie

Definately more than once/yes clusters/yes it does go away . Some days are worse , usually after a dream-ridden sleep . It's like someones got a slide projector in my head showing slides very fast...or repeating the same image over and over again but the image isn't clear.

> Did this just start recently, or have you had these "feelings" for a while?

Long time..Without meds (SSRI)it's usually got a bad feeling of dread/fear/paranoia
or intense euphoria with extremely pleasurable physical/mental 'rushes'..like yourself so many strange things that I'd be afraid to discuss incase docs would think I'm real nuts and force anti-psychotics into me : )
People used to think I took a lot of drugs-but I didn't ...before prescribed drugs.

Nothing much scares me nowadays ..

Thinking bout it..don't think I'd be me without it..if only I could stop the bad ones.
I'm mostly locked into imagination-which I would say is a kind of dissociation (sp?)-when I land into reality I have a panic attack .
I'm diagnosis 'unspecified'..Just means I've got a freaky brain.

My mind is always on some other stage, acting out a more interesting play than the reality. I have a hard time focusing on the moment at hand. My husband, on the other hand, is the opposite. He focuses on the moment at hand, the person he is looking at, the phone call, the one who comes to the door. And he claims he never dreams at night. The one or two times he has, it has been like a message or instruction for something he should do. I am a dreamer. Sometimes I wake up and cannot get out of the dream. It will upset me or twist my thinking around and will take awhile to snap back. Those are usually disturbing dreams. Oh, the issues.

I get paranoia/dread/anxiety/panicky, when having these "spells". Have you ever had any type of upset stomach or headache during or after a "spell"? That can happen with TLE. Not always. I have heard that some people actually find TLE pleasurable. More so the people that get the euphoria, dream sensations/recalls, deja vu, and other "pleasurable" sensations. I have researched TLE a lot. Some people with TLE only have very mild seizures (which causes the above sensations that I was talking about). Some get strong depersonalization, a floating feeling, and hallucinations.

Maybe you should mention to your regular Dr. about seeing a neurologist. They will be able to (or should) give you a diagnosis if TLE is what you have. They will do tests like EEG's, MRI's. I would do that first before bringing this up to your pdoc, since they might overlook other medical conditions. At least people I know who have TLE were diagnosed with say...Schizophrenia, and similar disorders first. Since you are afraid of the idea of people thinking your "nuts" and going on anti-psychotics. To anyone else who may read this: no, I'm not dogging on pdocs in any way, just saying some can be very specific in what they do and might not look into other possibilities, just as any Dr. of any form can. Wanted to make that clear!!!

Seriously though, look into TLE, its interesting, you may find a lot of "symptoms" that are similar to yours. If say you do have this...its very easily treatable. I take Klonopin, which also helps with my anxiety/aggitation. Just seeing a neurologist and getting their opinion may make you feel less "nuts" Believe me I went years as a pre teen & teen thinking I was really "nuts". Thats why I didn't tell anyone. I thought if I did, I would get put away in a mental hospital or something. I was upset but relieved at the diagnosis.

I have also read that, and believe TLE can cause, psychiatric problems, like anxiety, depression, and so on. Or people with TLE or any seizure disorder/epilepsy/ or any other disease/disorder for that matter, tend to have psychiatric problems because of the symptoms/diagnosis.

Oh well, I'm talking (typing) my head (hand) off again :-) ....remember I am now on the Adderall for my ADD...2nd day, still pretty speedy!!!!

Talk to your PCP, or GP, and go to " google" or whatever search engine you like to use, google just happens to be my favorite, t's the only one I use, and look up Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. There is lots of info.

Again, I could be totally on the wrong track (there that is the word that was at the tip of my tongue in my last post, such an easy word, and I couldn't get it out....ahhh...relief!!!! :-)

Keep me posted, and please don't not get help because you're afraid of the outcome. There is always treatment options for everything!!!!

Take care,

Your psycho-social-babble buddy,
Jodie

Dreamerz I'm like that all the time. i've been that way since i was a child, though they were more frightening then. I like it except that it gets in the way of doing things like hold a regular job. I hate it when I'm hypo though, or maybe on the wrong medication because
sometimes they get "loud" metaphorically speaking
more intrusive and aren't really dreamy anymore, I'll actually twitch and duck in reaction to them though I know they aren't external.
Its just me.
