The problem with soda...

Posted by beardedlady on June 3, 2002, at 4:29:57

Remember that tummy thing I was having a while back? I'd wake up with severe hunger pangs in the middle of the night, and I always had this little burping gas. My doc thought I had an ulcer, but it turned out to be the stage before: gastritis.

Well, I've given up soda (Diet Coke was my drink of choice) as a test. I used to drink several 2-liter bottles each week--could easily drink one in a day, which is why I only allowed myself to buy three or four a week.

Anyway, I've had about twenty ounces of DC in two and a half weeks. No gastritis.

I'm convinced.

I'm hooked on Diet DP's. Have been for a long time. I feel so much better when I just drink water. Now they have Vanilla Coke and it's pretty good. Another hurdle.

Or pop? If I was to request a "pop" at a restuarant in the States would they know what I wanted? And why do they always fill the cup with ice?

And why am I complaining, because now I can only drink it if it is watered down and I take a zantac.

ps where is kazoo?

It would depend what part of the U.S. you were in and what part of the world your waiter was from!!!

I can't drink much cola because the caffeine turns me into the human version of a mouse!!

That's why I said there's a problem with soda. I've had to take Zantac because of gastritis. I stopped soda and haven't had the need for Zantac.

Why ice, indeed? Why can't we get ice in Europe for our sodas? Or our pops? Especially since the refrigeration there is much less cold than ours!

Ice is probably used because it takes up more space and makes the product more profitable. But, frankly, if they stopped using ice, we'd probably stop ordering soda.

Pop is used in the mid-west, I think. But we all usually just order by the brand or type (Gimme a Coke, and hurry up about it!).

I heard on the health news yesterday that a compound found in brocolli heals ulcers. I turned to my son who was listening & said "I've read something like that 30 years ago but it was discounted because it came from a nutritionist."

Thirty years ago, it was found that a compound in raw cabbage would cure ulcers. Cabbage, itself, is too 'rough' but if a person extracted the juice & drank it for a couple of days, their ulcer was cured. It was called 'vitmain U' for it's ulcer healing properties. Very, very few believed it.

Now it's discovered that this compound in all members of the brassicae family (like brocolli, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, etc) kills the bacteria, Heliobacter pylori, that causes ulcers in suspectible people.

Next time, reach for a glass of cabbage juice. :-)

Woman,

Yes, I remember and I told you then: it's very bad for you. But you had to just run the little science experiment yourself, n'est-ce pas?? Sometime I feel like no one listens... (sniff sniff).

Soda eats holes in your stomach. Full stop.

And we Buffalonians say "soda," except I've lived far enough away from western NY for so long now that I say soda just like the other central NYers. However, we're in a college town, so I think if we once did say "pop" around here, the local consumer-driven economy (spurred on by the students' parents' money), has made the local restaurants and grocery-stores capitulate. Our local super-food chain, Wegmans, is a corporation out of Rochester (also western NY), and they have their own version of coke and sprite, seltzer, etc, which they call "W-Pop," however, and that's not about to change...

Hot water with lemons squeezed into it, that's the drink to drink, natural diuretic. I think it helped me lose weight last year...

More anon,

W.

Well, yes. It empties the bile ducts. You won't get gallstones either. Either? I mean, as well as not getting gastritis.

Why do we all gravitate to Beardy's stomach threads? They're so *interesting.* Comparing digestion. It's very intimate, you know. Except for Phil.
