something I hate that my new T says

Posted by happyflower on September 28, 2007, at 10:05:59

"well we all are human" ick ick ick It isn't a good excuse to me for all the "inhuman" things people do. My new T knows I don't like this saying. He even expects me to tell him to take that comment and shove it. Well he was right, I WAS thinking that. lol He said he uses that comment alot and I can tell when it is about ready to come out to, no matter how he sets up, ex well if they have 2 legs and walk upright, then... blah blah blah. aaauuuggghhhh! I tell him humanity sucks sometimes you know. Do your T says anything that drives you nuts, that you just want to tell them, "bite me" !!!!!

My T says lots of stuff that makes me want to tell him "bite me!" or "shut up!"

my #1 is "I'm not sure marriage is always like that"

another is "I'm not sure we all get to find our soul-mates"

another is "say that again"

This is too fun. I could go on and on but I have got to get busy working. Working for yourself is practically impossible with Babble around!

The one I hate is:
"Hang in there"
I want to choke anyone that says that to me! I want to say, do you know how long I've been hanging???? Not to mention just by my fingernails most the time!
So in spite of being human, we have to hang in there too.
Just kidding!
I'm a goof now that I'm an old bag!

Anything with the word "but" in it:

I believe you, but

She just said that yesterday and it burns my butt.

I can't think of anything she says that drives me nuts. At least, not in the way she says it, no phrases I can think of that she repeats.

She does repeat a couple of concepts that disturb me, of course. The big one is about my body, that being "recovered" isn't the same as being "thin" -- that recovery will mean accepting my body as it is. Nope. I'll know I'm recovered when I am thin enough...

Hm... Maybe I have to find a less talented T?

I also feel a little hurt when she says something with the word BUT...

and I hate it when she tells me that she wants the adult me in the room
or when she points out that I am acting like a 3 year old scared girl.

well "suck it up" has to be the worst thing my T has said that really bugged me.

Also, for a long time, he wore a pair of shoes that had holes in the bottom. Made me feel as though maybe I wasn't paying him enough.

He finally bought new shoes.

Seldom.

"it's tricky"

i know, a totally innocent phrase but i swear i think i'll scream. One day as he was about to speak i said "come on, say 'it's tricky'"

then again.. it's kind of a cute sort of annoying.

Hi,

when they ask for the adult to come back into the room, do you have any idea why that is. Why oh why ????????

I experienced this a lot exactly as you describe Frida, and it semed to confuse me.

does anyone know why a therapist would constantly say this in that situation.?

Does it reflect something on then the things they say, or is it out fault for being the wrong 'age' at that moment?

Anyone have any experience or idea on this?

regards

Does my therapist say things I don't like and that drives me nuts? He has, and I tell him so. He is very sensitive and accepting and takes it quite well and tells me he is glad I could tell him.

I didn't think we had to be a certain age or act a certain way in therapy. One think I like is I don't ever get any "shoulds" spoken or implied. Maybe you could call your T on that next time he says it.

Hi,
it confuses me too and it is very painful..

from what my T says, I understand that she needs the adult me to help the wounded girl that seems to act out when I'm there... she says (or I understand she says) we've given her space...but there comes a moment when she needs the adult me in the room because it's difficult to help the little girl I seem to become that doesn't accept anything, doesn't say a word and is only scared.

I don't know..when she explains to me I understand, but it hurts...She says that we need to work together, she and the adult me to help that little girl. That if I'm all the time the little girl, then we can't process anything, we can't look at things, we can't try to understand and change things....

I guess in my case, my T has been really patient with me for years, but she needs the adult me to take control a little and not to let the little girl take me to a place of fear and silence...she needs the adult me to try harder to leave that place of pain. But still...it feels hard to do,

I haven't been able to explain to my T or to talk about this... I guess part of me just wishes I could be free to be that little girl, and just tell her the secrets and be comforted, without having to process or talk about things from the adult me.

That's another thing she says..when the adult me is not in the room...I get lost in the moments as if I were in the past or as if things were really happening or I were experiencing things from a little girl's view and it's too hard..I behave and i'm there as a little girl. But I guess that happens for a reason.

I just don't know...it's confusing...and painful...

is some of this what your T says to you?

I can't imagine my therapist ever saying that to me. Of course, he knows I wouldn't like it at all. He's respectful to me always.

At most he might ask if it would be helpful for me to have my rational self more there. If I said no, he'd accept that.

Because I suppose sometimes it is more helpful to me. But if that's not who's having a problem, why would it help to talk to that part of me? I think you need to address the problem at its source.

My therapist rarely says something I really hate more than once. :) He seems to keep a scorecard in his head. "This one didn't go over well. Let me look down the column of similar thoughts."

He says I'm still punishing him for the time he told me I'd have to suck it up.

I did offend him yesterday by implying that the name of one of his favorite books was likely to have his clients walking out of therapy if he mentioned it to them. "Shut Up, Stop Whining, and Get a Life: A Kick-Butt Approach to a Better Life"

Hmmm... I think sometimes he says "my bad" when an apology is really what's called for.
