Howdy! I'm no expert on magnesium. I have played with it a few times though and have read many previous threads on it.

Magnesium glycinate is a favorite of many people. The glycine component helps the magnesium to be even more calming. Another favorite is magnesium taurate...the taurine itself is good for bipolar. Some people use magnesium citrate. For dosing, you just have to keep increasing it until you get diarrhea, which means the dose is too high, or until you get side effects. People take anywhere from 200mg to 1000mg a day.

I am very sensitive to magnesium. I definitely give it credit for being calming. It's awesome for that. But it also gives me leg cramps and worsens my depression. I can only take small amounts of it. Most people have no problem with it though.

Magnesium is a good antimanic agent. Some people feel that it helps their depression too.

I believe that anyone with bipolar should take as much as they can tollerate.

It helps regulate NMDA receptors in such a way that can dampen overactive glutamatergic activity.

I find that when my mind is saying a million things at once, then magnesium can really help.

One of my doctors thought that there was a delicate balance between calcium and magnesium. This would make some sense if one were to look at the mechanisms involved in the presynaptic vesicular release of neurotransmitters. I find that taking large doses of calcium make me feel significantly more depressed almost instantly.

Is there any advantage to taking the taurate preparation?

Have you tried fish oil?

Please be careful with magnesium, since it can worsen your depressive phases. Maybe you could use it only during your manic phases.
