B-complex vitamin is making me ANGRY

Posted by jerrympls on March 23, 2006, at 12:52:08

I've NEVER had such a profound effect from taking a vitamin supplement - EVER EVER. Recently I got some basic B-complex vitamins. Yesterday I took one and 30 minutes later I was FURIOUS at myself and everyonne and the world!! Luckily it wore off in a couple hours. Then today, thinking my response may have been a fluke I took another one and same thing - within 30minutes I was so irritable and angry/furious at every little thing!! I was NOT wanting to hurt myself or anyone - NOTHING like that. NOR was I delerious or psychotic by any means - I just felt REAL anger and just a feeling of being pissed off. For example - I'd accidentally knock over something I was drinking - and I would get SO furious that it had happened - and I called myself a f--ing clutz, etc.

WHY am I having this response to a B vitamin?? Someone said in an earlier post that B vitamins can be very stimulating - however, I wasn't stimulated- in the sense of having a lot of energy or feeling jittery or manic. I just felt pissed off!

What's going on with me??? Anyone???

Jerry

Oh thank goodness..... Well, I don't want to imply I'm happy you had that reaction. What your post does is make me feel validated that someone else, somewhere, has had adverse reactions to vits. I have an awful time tolerating vits and supplements. B vit's, in particular, make me more anxious, irritable, generally achy, downish feeling and make my "mature" lady night sweats tenfold worse. I've noted these reactions for a few years. I, for some irrational reason, seem to find the need to test them after some time passes off and it's the same thing every time. I "buy" into the idea I need them, they're "essential" due to my less than stellar eating habits, and what the heck, they're "just" vitamins.

It's really strange. I have no explanation for it but I do know it's happened to me......

How high is the Niacin level in the supplement ? Time release nicotinic acid is actually also a prescription drug as well as OTC and is used off label I think experimentally for anxiety relief though I found it too intense when I went on the treadmill.

I would say that it is due to an activation of the cholinergic system, depending on the content of things like choline, b12 etc. I would recomend taking a mild B complex, not b100 stuff thats nuts. I noticed a similar reaction, but it went away after prolonged use, (2 weeks).

Overall it has helped a lot.

I quess thats what I wanted to emphasize was that at first I reacted adversely to them, but it really seems to have benifited after a little time.

See the study:

http://www.moodfoods.com/moodfood.htm

I had also found that sometimes b vitamin and SSRI's don't mix. B6 can increase brain serotonin content, and that may add serotonergic side effects, including sweating etc. I reacted adversly to B complex + SSRI combination, but that just gave me the message, *hey*, if b complex and SSRI is leading to too much serotonin, which would be the sensible one to reduce ? To make a long story short, the b vitamins were indeed interacting with the SSRI, but a SSRI reduction helped.

I have much the same reaction. Vitamin B complex B100 makes me angry and more anxious. I just know not to take it in that strength.

The B Vitamins have so many functions in the body. Who knows what happens when you take 100mg of each one in a complex.

Vitamin B6 helps in the production of Serotonin but it may decrease BRAIN Dopamine levels However it may increase BLOOD Dopamine levels.

Vitamin B6 is a cofactor for the manufacture of Taurine from Cysteine or Methionine, but Vitamin B5 is an enemy of Taurine.

Vitamin B6 is a cofactor for the conversion of Tryptophan to 5-Hydroxytryptophan, Serotonin and Picolinic Acid

These Vitamins have many interactions and with each other either directly or indirectly.

How about B Complex 50mg once a day in an already anxious person. I was told they help with energy and don't increase anxiety is this wrong or right? Love Phillipa

Some people they can create anxiety, and in others they seem to reduce anxiety.

I think that if a b complex does weird things, it may be adventagious to experiement with the b vitamins seperately. Folic acid, for instance has been shown to increase prozac response rates.

Jerry either give them away or throw them out there is too much niacin in them. Take GNC MegaMan. Oh and take vitamin C too. I looked up an old professor friend of mine and he gave me this advise. As my anxiety is worse on B too. Love Phillipa

Like I said, the biggest mistake people make is in taking nonbiological doses of the vitamins.

When under stress you loose b vitamins very quickly.

I would recomend trying a lower magnatude complex.

You might be geting too much bvitamins compared to other vitamins/nutrition by taking so much of an artificial dose of them. I agree with everyone to lower your dose, also that you probably can just take them every other day or so, and start introducing good fruits & vegetables to get your vitamins (i think your body can use them better anyway). there are good food sources for bvitamins, for instance, like complex carbs-oats etc.
vitamins are weird. For me, high doses of vitamin c makes me anxious and angry. most people it calms down. go figure.

B vitamins are water soluable. What your body doesn't need you will urinate it out. the way you can tell is if your urine is bright yellow. But you must drink a lot of water too. Love Phillipa

A bright yellow hue to the urine following a B-complex vitamin is a harmless side effect of the riboflavin (B-2)

I'm not sure if it's a reliable indicator of whether you are getting too much Vitamin B's.

My daughter has MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities) & is allergic/sensitive to all kinds of things. Ever heard of a "bubblegirl"? She's not that bad, but it's that type of thing.

ANYway, she has a bad reaction to incense - when she smells it, or is exposed to it she gets SUPER-angry. Makes me wonder if your angry reaction could even be an allergic reaction to something in the vitamins.

I started taking a multivitamin when research into my anxiety brought me to B vitamins. I was getting better, so I attributed it to them, but looking back it could have been about 10 things. Anyways, looking back the anxiety was worse in the morning after eating, which is when I took the vitamin, and much less after lunch and dinner. I started taking 3 a day and I was more tired, and my heart rate was real high. My anxiety, and panic was less, but if youre really tired you dont pay as much attention to them.
Taking a super vitamin made all of the symptoms worse except for tiredness, which could have been a coincidence or the fact that it was fortfied for energy. I then took 3 B vitamin complexes in one night, and went from a stable mood to a panic attack. I also have taken a multivitamin before eating , about an hour before. I figured it needed time to get fully into my system to work. Doing this gave me bad anxiety, and some kind of weird dementia. I dont know what to call it but its insane. Its like a combo of anxiety, panic, and lucidity.

They have never made me angry, as far as I can remember.

You should look into Candida, and any other disorders that screw with how things are digested. Gluten intolerance, etc.

, and get your vitamins through food. I dont think youre suspose to get a big dose of all these vitamins at once. Doesnt seem, right, and could screw with all sorts of things from my limited understanding of how they work together, and deplete the others.

I have read a few articles highly suggesting against any vitamins from a pill, unless youre pregnant, old, and a few other types. Vegetarians, etc.

B-vitamins, especially folic acid and vitamin B6, will increase histamine and result in increased cortisol levels.
Cortisol is a stress hormone that has a degenerative effect on the brain.

I haven't gotten through all above posts so please forgive if I repeat one of you, but I read in a book recently that the key with Bs is balance- not too much, not too little. Too much is as bad as too little. I think it was The Better Brain Book, but I can't remember for sure. That's a really good book, by the way.
