You know the actual price of generic zyprexa is not that much lower than brand. 90 days of 10mg generic is $1000, brand $1500. But yes copay is much lower.

How are you doing these days? Are you still taking perphenazine? How much zyprexa now? Are they working? Do you live in USA?

Unbelievable prices! I can't get over how US prices are so ludicrously high compared with elsewhere. I have no idea how they get away with it. The current UK wholesale price for TEVA's olanzapine 10mg tabs is less than £3.50 for 28 tablet pack. This works out at just over $5. Lots of other manufacturers make olanzapine tablets and many are less expensive.

(These are not retail prices, but you get the idea).

Generic drug companies make oodles of money because they don't have to invest money in research and development. I'm sure their profit margins are quite high. They can afford to sell their products cheaper, but why should they if the market will bear the inflated prices they charge? The generic drug market doesn't seem to operate as if competition were a factor. I don't know what's going on.

Pharmaceutical companies charge US citizens the cost of their R & D so that they can sell their products cheaper elsewhere.

> So I've taken 2 doses or genric now and no more brand. So far I sleep as well, not anxious, can still eat, thoughts are not weird. I realy have not noticed a difference between the two. Even the strength of dose seems to be the same.

That's cool. Hopefully it will stay that way. With me when I had a negative response to a generic switch it took a while to notice. It sort of crept up on me over a week or two and then by a month things had definitely taken a bit of a downturn. Other times generics were ok. I think it just depends on the particular med, the lab who made it, and the person's own chemistry. So a trial is the only way to find out and I hope yours goes good because that would save you a lot of money.

The generics market is very competitive here, and the industry is not always profitable. As an example, some average UK wholesale prices for this month, plus the price of the UK brand...

Fluoxetine 20mg caps (pack of 30) - £0.23 - Branded Prozac is £1.50

Citalopram 20mg tabs (pack of 28 tabs) - £0.30 - branded Cipramil is £8.95

Risperidone 1mg tabs (pack of 20 tabs) - £0.33 - branded Risperdal is £8.36

Diazepam 2mg tabs (28) - £0.15 - Valium is discontinued.

Aspirin disp 75mg tabs (28) - £0.12 - no brands.

I'm not sure what you mean here. The NHS UK price of branded Zyprexa 10mg tabs is £87.40 for one month's supply. Virtually no one gets prescribed branded Zyprexa though, it is one of the most expensive psych meds.

As a side note, various major pharmaceutical companies now have their own generics divisions. For example, Novartis sell the breast cancer drug Femara in the UK for £84.86 for a pack of 28.... whilst the generics division of Novartis sells exactly the same tablets in an unbranded box for £3.39

They charge you a lot more than the cost of R&D :(
Most countries have price controls on medicines though. If companies could charge US prices everywhere then they would - but they can't!

Sick.

I believe the generic division of Novartis is still called Sandoz.

It is, yes. Sandoz do quite a wide range of generics. When Novartis brands lose patent protection in the UK, Sandoz always launch a generic to compete with other manufacturers. They do this to maintain some sales, even at much lower prices. It is still worthwhile to sell letrozole (generic Femara) for £3.39. Mass produced products are not expensive to manufacture.

I imagine that Lilly can produce Zyprexa for about $0.20 per box. It is produced in huge quantities so it will cost virtually nothing per pack.

I take enalepril for high blood pressure, if I get the originator brand (Renitec, MSD, its $24 per month, if I get Sandoz Enalapril, its $6 per month..... guess which one I get!

For that type of med, there's very rarely a reason to take the brand.

Still going good! Guess which one I'm going to take? Virtualy no difference! Just wish they would lower the price a little, $1000 seems kind of high for a generic. Thats how much brand was when I started it.

It is very expensive, but it will get much cheaper once price competition increases.

I believe you have some strange system that restricts competition at the launch of new generics. Olanzapine was cheap here from day 1 because many generic companies launched on the same day.

When generic Lamictal first came out, it was more expensive than brand for me, at least at the pharmacy I was using at the time. The generic becomes cheaper when there are multiple generics being made.
