Amitriptyline trial

Posted by rculater on May 14, 2011, at 15:42:15

Sleeping like a rock on this - Question. Does the tiredness, grogginess, lazyness im getting the next day go away with time ? Or is that a trade off for having such a good nights sleep ? I take 10mg about 9PM.

At that dose it should, but it also depends on how your body responds to it. My elderly family member takes 5mg and is fine in the morning but 10-25mg keeps her down for the whole day. I take 150mg and do not experience any morning-after drowsiness but I've been taking it for like more than 10 years. I also find the morning-after stuff and cogitive dulling is much worse when I'm on benzos and painkillers like NSAIDS. Even metformin for me seems to affect the drug's metabolization and can get me drowsy and groggy and slow-witted during the day. It's a terrific sleep tool but the side-effects can be very harsh. Try it for some time and hopefully you can tolerate it. Try going down to 5mg or even 2.5mg if the SEs become too much. Watch for cognitive issues the day after plus other TCA SEs like dry mouth and altered heart-rate.

Funny thing is I actually sleep less with my 150mg dose - I do like 4 or 5 hours and I wake up feeling great. It seems to induce deep restful sleep unlike the shallow sleep I used to get with benzos,

hp, does ami become more stimulating at the higher doses?

I am seriously considering this at the low dose for sleep and pain. I think it's great you've got this working for you.

rculator, good luck to you with this.

Thanks - I took 5mg last night and still slept right through and today I feel more with it. So im going to continue with 5mg for a bit.

Already thinking about adding something for my dysthemia later as im not sure such a low dose is going to touch that - but happy im finally getting a good night sleep - its been a long long time. Its also stopped suspected IBS symptoms ive been having for a few months. Thank you.

rculator, your trial is in it's first week? Maybe threre'll be cumulative effects that will help offset the disthymia. One could hope. That the ibs symptoms are clearing is brilliant, imo.

Good news.

I was just recently thinking about a new med to ease my difficulty in sleeping and constant waking up (I'm on the MAOI Parnate, which does this). I've tried so many other sleep meds, but maybe this could be promising.

Do you become tolerant over time?

Im not sure you can mix TCAs with MAOIs. You may want to confirm this. Hope you get some sleep soon.

Yeah TCAs are officially contraindicated with MAOIs because of the risk of serotonin syndrome, it seems that there is a lot of literature out there about safely using amitriptyline concurrently with an MAOI. This thread also mentions Parnate + amitrip:

I think using a small dose of amitriptyline like 5mg might be feasible but you'd absolutely have to do it under close supervision of your doctor.
