Low dose aminoglutethimide or ketoconazole ?

Posted by zzzz7 on June 6, 2010, at 23:27:17

Have any of you tried low dose aminoglutethimide or ketoconazole for treatment of depression?

My own depression tracks cortisol spikes exactly (I was amazed when I looked in an endocrinology textbook at a graph of cortisol release--all the spikes in the graph were exactly where I got most depressed during the day). It also gets worse when I exercise, and it gets better for 20 minutes or so when I take a low dose of DHEA.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks.

This med looks like quite a good shout, suprised there aren't more posts on it. My only worry would be, is it safe with clonazepam....i think they are both broke down by the same enzyme or something?

cheers

Ketaconazole I am not familiar with , except that it is a close relative of Diflucan. The two are supposedly very similar, except that diflucan is safer and less finnicky.

All I know is, from the first day of taking diflucan for suspected fungal issues, I immediately noticed mood improvement more pronounced than an antidepressant. Why or how, other than killing fungus/yeast, I have no idea. It just is.

Trying to get the right dose, I started out at 200mg a day but have since discovered 50mg once every 2 or 3 days is good. It is very long lasting and accumulates.

Thanks all for the responses. The drug is an anti-fungal and is the active ingredient in Nizoral shampoo (that is, ketoconazole is).

I don't think I have Cushings. I think that something--high-dose SSRIs, depression, Provigil, benzo use--something--has caused me to be very sensitive to sudden spikes in cortisol levels. So if I can even out the spikes, or reduce them once they occur, I hopefully will feel better.

I'm steadily better on 3.75mg of mirtazapine after not being able to take any other antidepressant because they made me depressed. (This was a sudden shift after years of taking 110mg of Prozac and other high doses of SSRIs.)

hey bleauberry, did you/have you used with benzos - as they are both effected by enzyme cytochrome p450....and apparently this can spell trouble.

cheers
