Could taking GABA interfere with meds?

Posted by Cseagraves on January 20, 2009, at 13:31:23

I take extra dosages of GABA, L-taurine and L-theanine supplements to help with mood and anxiety.

Could this possibly interfere with what meds are supposed to be fixing?

Plan to start on Marplan shortly. Was wondering if this could cause a problem?

Thanks for any info.

Courtney

I don't know. I wouldn't think so, though. I'm afraid it will take a more educated person than myself to answer your question - if it is answerable at all. When in doubt, remove as many variables as you can. Having said that, if these substances are providing substantial relief, I would continue with them - at least until that more educated fellow comes along. (COUGH - Larry Hoover).

What do you think of L-theanine? How does it affect you?

I can't think of any possible adverse interaction, if that's what you're worried about. In fact, as taurine is a substrate for monoamine oxidase, your plan to start using an MAOI might give you a stronger effect from the taurine you do use. Rodent studies have shown pretty substantial increases in brain taurine concentration on use of both MAO-A and -B inhibitors.

Excessive gabaergic activity can theoretically be depressogenic. Gaba has an inhibitory effect on stem cell proliferation which might impact synaptic plasticity in the longer term. On the other hand, some mood disorders are assoicated with low cortical gaba. If such is the case, you may be moving in the right direction. Studies are mixed on the effect of gabaergic anxiolytic augmetnation of antidepressant therapy. For instance, some studies show benzodiazapines augment SSRI's while other studies suggest they may interfere with the clinical action. Anticonvulsants, in general, are better antimanic agents than antidepressants. Many anticonvulsants cary a warning of increased suicide potential.

I personally found that long term use of taurine was slighly depressogenic for me. I noticed this less so with theanine.

Ideally, the marplan will help with anxiety in which case you may need less of the other agents.

What effects should one expect from taurine? I had a search around and it mentions on wiki that there is no evidence that it is energy giving despite being in energy drinks. I havn't been able to find the stuff by itself yet but i've been trying to find out what it is in energy drinks that gives me the energy to do stuff and a bit of a buzz.. Ive tried taking all the vitams listed in the drink along with caffiene tablets... the only thing i can see left is taurine or inositol (which i can only find in 50mcg tablets where the energy drinks seem to average around 50mg)

Scott unique is quite a unique amino. On paper it looks like a godsend, apha calming waves, incresae blood dopamine/gaba,gaba able to cross the brain barrier and so on.

I have used smart drugs/nutrients in every way,i.e Picamilion,Phenibuttt,Taunrine.

My personal conclusion that none have really made a impact.

Taurine id have to say is the most amazing peofile even if i personaly did not benifit from it.

Taurine stablizez over activity and basicaly can is consifered neuro protective,

Also as a side note, just because over the counter prodcuts are used, doesent mean there is a
otc standerd.

Im not surewhat the guidlines at the moment, however over the counter supplements that are quality are stamped......GMP
