seroquel (low dose)

Posted by nellie7 on March 4, 2007, at 13:41:24

Hi,

After several unsuccessful attempts to take other APs, I have been advised to take seroquel 25 mg.

Has anyone tried a similar dose, and does this drug cause weakness or sleepiness? TD? Other problems?

TIA.

Hi Phillipa,

Thanks for your reply.
Btw, I heard that seroquel can have an effect on the thyroid gland. Has yours been affected by the drug?

Nellie.

I took Seroquel at 100 mg at night to supposedly help me sleep. I was told that was the highest I could go for sleep properties because over 100 mg is when you get into the antipsychotic properties. For me....and I seem to react differently on meds than a lot of people....it didn't make me the least bit sleepy.

I started with 25 mg for a week and it made me feel anxious during the day (though not certain it wasn't from withdrawal from Zyprexa). My PDOC had me raise the dosage gradually so that I'm now at 300 mg. It knocks me right out and I feel better during the day now. Apparently the higher the dose the less it makes you sleep which to me is a paradox and has, so far, not been the case. I sleep like a log within an hour of taking it! I have Bipolar and also take 100 mg of Lamictal, 10 mg of Lexapro, and 1 mg of Rivotril (Clonazepam/Klonopin).

As someone who has taken Seroquel as high as 1200mg I can tell you that TD is almost impossible at 25mg. Some doctors do like to use it for sleep, it still wouldn't be my first class of medications for sleep but we're talking the lowest potency atypical at its next to last feasible lowest dose (12.5mg), since 800 is typically for psychosis (not for my case).

Seroquel pretty much causes sleepiness (H1) at any dose range (it is second only to Clozaril among neuroleptics) and that's all you're getting at 25mg, the other transmitters are so low in the noise level.

I was on 800mg and it would always make me to go sleep very easily.

I was prescribed and am still on between 25 and 75 mg./day of Seroquel.

I like it's sleepy properties, which I will accept as an anxiolytic.

It really gave me the munchies at first, and they only seemed to go away after 2 years, and it still stimulates my appetite. I've gained about 20 lbs, and I'm sure it's related to Seroquel mixed with the Celexa I take.

Seroquel makes me enjoy naps a lot. It makes food taste really good. It didn't give me any akathisia like Abilify did when I tried it.

How long does the hangover last the next day?

I liked the way Remeron deepened sleep, but found the next day more or less unbearable, and wondered if Seroquel was like that.

Some people say that Seroquel gives them a somewhat restless (I think?) sleep.

Thank you all (nm)

I took a low dose like you a few years ago. It was fine for me. Now I take 100-300 a night. Its hard to get up in the middle of sleep. I always hope there isnt a fire. But low doses never impaired me like this.

100-300 a night isn't necessary unless the agent is being used for slight psychosis. You're now activating dopamine blockade and serotonin blockade and inconsistent dosing isn't good for neuroleptics. As for a fire, that's what a good smoke detector(s) are for and foldup window escape ladders.

And if you're not taking it for psychosis, there are a host of other choices that wouldn't raise the side effect EPS to TD sliding scale.
