I saw a PsyDoc in hospital a while ago who (knowing i had knowledge and experience) in meds, basically asked me what i wanted. I plummed for 2 meds.
Does your Doc give you what you want, or what he thinks you 'need'?

My doc also gives me what I ask for, presuming it's reasonable. She feels I know enought to guess what is going to work as well as she.

Mine considers my ideas, sometimes agrees, sometimes has a convincing disagreement as to why it's not a hot idea for me. Ie, when I asked about lyrica, he told me he doubted I'd like it because here I've been complaining about cognitive fuzziness forever, and he believes it would make it worse-possibly cause weight gain, too. Sometimes my ideas would interact poorly, or have risk for side effects that I didn't know about, and wouldn't want. That sort of thing. He's got plenty of his own ideas, too. No shortage of those.

My pdoc asks me what I want for medication all the time even though I tell her I want *her* to choose, say an antidepressant. We have gone over the pros/cons of AD's many times but she always asks me what *I* want to take. For once I would be grateful if she would just prescribe something she thinks will help. She has the MD after all! BTW, I have several AD's in my cabinet but am afraid to take any of them including Emsam.

Hmm, I wonder if doctors believe patients will be most compliant and have most possible faith in their treatments when they have a say in designing them? They have the MDs, and can over-see, evaluate patients' suggestions, of course.

It's something I've been thinking about for a while. My last pdoc was a fresh graduate and I suspect I've actually been using and researching meds, and even working with and listening to other people who are taking meds for longer than he has. He was the only pdoc who was very hostile to me having any sort of involvement and hadn't a clue about MAOIs. When I asked for Parnate he prescribed 30mg isocarboxazid (Marplan) and when he saw my expression he said "that's Parnate isn't it?". Oh well...........
Yes, I do much better with meds I've elected to take rather than those that have been foisted upon me. I once stuck with moclobemide for six months just to please another young locum graduate. Never again.

Iv seen a few psychs on the NHS in the UK. In my opinion ther a set of self righteous idiots. They dont listen to the wealth of knowledge you have (and i have an extensive one now!!) and are quick to poo poo any alternative meds - my last pdoc compared nutrition n herbal meds too homeopathy!!!!! I was astonished!!!
Even when i told him wot worked theanine NMDA antagonist basically, told him about my anorgasma lackj of sex drive extreme anxiety (dopamine and GABA!) and he gave me celexa, the most unselective, libido killing SSRI - wel thanks doc!!!!

Both. The doctor/patient relationship should be one of a consultant, not a dictator. Basically, the way it works is that I tell my doctor the way I feel, let him know if I have any ideas, and he tells me whether or not they are sound. For instance, I wanted to do Nardil + Dexedrine. He had me do trials of a few other things first that were "safer", and I went along with it because I trust him implicitly. But Nardil + Dexedrine is what I ended up on because nothing else really worked that well.

Hi,
I have a fairly good MD now who will listen to what I have to say and the two of us will make a decision on what to try. Of course, he has the final say, he has the prescription pad. In the past, I have had PDOCs who said up front that they wanted to work "with" the patient, when in fact this was the furthest thing from their mind. I had one PDOC who would have watched me suicide before giving me a MAOI to save my life. I am not kidding. My current MD does not have a huge knowledge of psychopharmacology, but I have a degree in Psychology and constantly study the medications that I use. I would much rather have a doctor who will listen and work with me, rather than one so caught up in his own ego that unless the idea is his, forget it!

If I had my choice I think I'd be in a better state. But I dont have endless money and the like. I joke with my doc that he is my 'middle man' between myself and the pharm.

What I want! With in reason. Like my last apointment. He asked what changes do you want to make, before and ideas from him. I wanted to stay the same. But he suggested I take more abilify, for a week and call him.
