Had hydrocephalus in NB #1;this is #2 HELP?

Posted by Fivefires on February 9, 2007, at 15:40:50

Help guys. I am very fearful.

I had hydrocephalus from constant hyperventilating in the hospital when had first NB and 'it went away' when they gave me Valium.

I've been left on my own since first telling P 'I felt the same symptoms as NB 2yrs ago' since first of Jan.

Even got to a facility only to have my P tell them not to keep me.

I just read that hydrocephalus can be deadly.

I'm so weak I'm afraid I can't stand in the shower.

I haven't done the above for days because of this weakness/tiredness/slowness.

My appt w/ this P is just hrs away.

What shall I do?

Well I'm pretty sure you don't have hydrocephalus as it occurrs in newborns mostly and is water on the brain. It usually requires a shunt put in that goes to the stomach so the water drains there. And you would have a seriously big head. Size wise I believe. If wrong please correct me. Love Phillipa

I am not your doctor and I cannot give you a diagnosis as an untrained observer but hyperventilization is not generally a sign of hydrocephalus. Its, as Phillipa said, something normally shown up in neonates and is treated with shunts, perhaps diuretics and other treatments. It can occur in adults, but it is usually due to other conditions such as certain rare types of tumors and the like.

I think you're more likely developing a form of OC Spectrum disorder and/or Conversion disorder from worrying about esoteric illnesses. But that's merely my opinion and from what I see you're getting a second opinion from another psychiatrist.

The mind is a powerful thing and the "barely able to stand" part could just be the autonomic (base) nervous system gone awry by fear, causing "medical student syndrome" (the fear of every disease learned.)

When in hospital and hyperventilating too long w/o relief, the top of my head felt like there was pressure ... a real physical feeling of lots of pressure on the top of my head. Once given Valium it abated. Sorry incorrect medical terminology. I've been looking for 'a medical term' for what happened to me. I should have researched it further. Tks.

In the nervous breakdown, I was hyperventilating all waking hours (of course not when sleeping) and if it was left unchecked for too long a time, I'd feel this fullness at the top of my head as if it was going to blow up. I would also, during that time, feel a bit out of touch w/ reality. And, at one time, my blood pressure either fell or went off the charts as almost passed out, but caught by a nurse and then made to sit w/ head down below knees, until doc called back to say 'whoops forgot to write med order .. pls give to her'.

No P has given me a second opinion. The P I was seeing at the time retired quite quickly afterwards. In fact, I've only gotten 'nervous breakdown isn't real' type answers and no one paid attn to the 'feeling like the top of my head was going to explode'.

I understand from Phillipa it is was not hydrocephalus. But, what was it? I was hoping someone here might know the proper terminology. It did feel like hydrocephalus! It was definitely NOT a headache.

tks, 5f

Well I would venture to say that since I had the same head feeling with cymbalta second time around and didn't trust the pdoc that it may have been severe anxiety. Just a guess as I think thats what happened to me too new doc new location and didn't like him. Love Phillipa ps sounds like your blood pressure was low if head down between your knees.
