what does this mean.

I read in the article it was successful with clonazepam but not alprazolam.

I take Xanax, and Prozac 20mg

Im starting to read all these trial articles.

Anyways, can anyone explain, or know what that means?

Matt

Hi Matt.

What the abstract is saying is that Prozac makes Xanax stay in the body longer, but does not do this to Klonopin. The interaction is modest at best.

Prozac acts to inhibit (slow-down) an enzyme called CYP450-3A. Ordinarily, this enzyme acts to metabolize (break down) Xanax so that the body can eliminate it (clearance). Prozac prevents this from happening to some degree.

3A4 is largely discounted in the PI and the fairly substantial list at

http://medicine.iupui.edu/flockhart/clinlist.htm

the entire interactions are at

http://medicine.iupui.edu/flockhart/table.htm

Prozac does however inhibit certain drugs at a clinical level at 2D6, which does not affect common benzodiazepines.

Luvox, fluvoxamine, however, is known to affect 3A4, which affects the level of alprazolam and diazepam (Xanax, Valium).
